I have Windows 8 and the game is not working for me. Not sure if that's because of Windows 8 though.

This worked for me

If it crashes shortly after trying to run it, go to the Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, and under Sound, select "Manage audio devices". Switch to the Recording tab in the window that pops up, and right click in any empty space in the list (it's a list of devices, assuming you have any others), and check to see if "Show Disabled Devices" is checked. If not, check it. A new thing called "Stereo Mix" should appear. Enable it and try the game again.

I had the same issue, and this worked. Granted, I'm on Windows 7. But if you're also on 7 or Vista, this should be the fix.

Thanks Pinesal - I was kicking my ♥♥♥ trying to get this to work again (it worked fine in XP)

To add, you might not find Stereo Mix even after opting to display hidden devices.
In this instance you should update the audio drivers for your motherboard.

If you're not sure of your mobo's make and model this program is very helpful and thorough at listing your equipment:

The same was being said when windows 7 came out and vista before it. its the uncertainty that old games will not work with modern OS's

and yes, windows 8 is fantastic, glad you agree.

Well, guys, I got the game, had the crashing problem, but here's how I fixed it:

In the actual game, go to option>audio>mixer config>select disabled
Then I played a game of instant action (with no sound),
Go back to the main menu, option>audio>mixer config>select software (the hardware option disappeared for some reason)

Now when I play, it doesn't crash, and I have sound.

Try this if you want to but i can't guarantee its succes, it just worked for me. Tell me how it goes.

It might be. I don't know as I haven't 'upgraded' to it yet. Probably won't for some time as Windows 7 is perfectly fine for me right now. However, there are people who are running Windows 8 for whatever reason.

So, that being the case, what the hell is wrong with people inquiring whether or not a specific game runs under a certain version of an operating system? Only a fool would make fun of them for doing so. Only a ♥♥♥♥♥ would buy a game if they were uncertain whether or not it would run on their system.

also this is an old game i would ask the same thing about win 7 as for win 8 its great i love it and all new games have better performance on win 8 in some cases upto 10% i could never go back to win 7 now
