Wargame: European Escalation and its later game Wargame: Red Dragon are shining examples of what RTS games should be. Well designed and masterfully researched, these games are a must own for an RTS fan. If you want to recreate what the cold war played out would be like.... Wargame. If you want to learn about the capabilities of different military vehicals from both sides of the cold war....Wargame.
On a gameplay front, the game has a short, but steep learning curve, and only minimal tutorials. The difficulty curve on the other hand is rather....monolithic. The single player campaign is challenging and fun, rewarding those that really invest time in the game. Mechanically, the game is very functional. I wish some of the AI were a tad sharper or more clear, but it all works very well. While later games add new mechanics and refinements to the Wargame system, European Escalation is still the most functional of the games and the best way to begin a Wargame experience (Aircraft in Red Dragon operate by some sort of gypsy targeting, difficult to use well).
Don't be discouraged by the difficulty of the campaign, or the initially confusing combat; once you understand how to play this game it is one of the goodies!
