Are tanks still useful in modern warfare?
I've been playing the game a good week now and noticed quickly how incredibly vulnerable tanks are on today's battlefield.

I'm not sure how well the game approxemates reality but seeing even the most expensive NATO tanks shot down effortlessly by 1 guy with a RPGn and being annoyed by T-62M's, are tanks still useful?

hell yeah they are. heres 2 things you need to look up.

The battle of 73 easting.
and the Fallujah Invasion.

In both of those, M1's are the main stars in 2 completely different scenarios

Tanks win battles, without them its a firefight.

Tanks = King of battle field
Infantry = Queen of battle field

Together they make a perfect couple

to run away? ;

( like airforce 1? )

'tanks' for the comments. I will look up those battles. Still I find in the game that my tanks often get shot up by those annoying cheap tanks with missiles, not to mention those bmp-2 with their missiles. So, in game, how do you keep them alive? Gunships tend to get shot down by the mg fire and often there's AA present too.

so far i have come up with charging them which reminds me of karate where you do the opposite of what would come natural (like to run away in a fast jet). It works some times and sometimes... ehhhh..

Again, thanks for the input. would that refer to the first of the second battle of Fallujah?

I posted a longer reply but it was deleted on accident. :/

Tanks are more durable (especially against arty), have powerful reliable cannons, good ammo capacity, and are immune to certain weapons types. They are meant to give your force weight and staying power, and used-in combination with other units.

Alot of wargame is about supressing ATGMs so your main force can operate with more freedom. I find 2 ways to do this best, so far:

1. Artillery support. Particularly when used in tandem with good recon, this is the best approach. ATGMs have the distict disadvantage of being useless if the operators morale is low. They are usually come in soft-skinned vehicles or infantry, except PACT ATGM tanks.

2. Cheap unit rush: fast vehicles with an autocannon or light gun, accompanied by cheap infantry. This is the easiest, but still risky. It's best if you have you main force engage as the cheap shock troops do their work.

Rushing is a valid tactic, but its not good unless you can get a critical numerical advantage. You will need to rush with cheap units, never rush with expensive or even moderately costly tanks unless you have no choice. Always have the cheaper meatshields in the front.

that's exactly what made me wonder if those M1's are still worth the money. In the first mission of Able Archer I set myself an extra goal of keeping all my M1's intact. I had to replay it a couple of times, but I think in the end I got 5 of them out safely.

Still I had to constantly babysit and worry about them, which isn't at all like the Tiger tank in world war ii? When I played Close Combat 3 one, 1 King Tiger took out pretty much took out everything in it's path, seriously outnumbered. I don't get that feeling when I'm using tanks in Wargame EE/modern warfare. They seem vulnerable and in the back of my mind I think what an M1A1 costs.

So, do tanks still decide battles on their own? like Cavalry in the traditonal sense? leading the charge and putting fear in the hearts of their enemies as they are spotted or are they just very attractive targets, ready for the slaughter by a missile that costs 'only' 80,000 dollars, or even less.

.. and i don't have the expansion yet, but i fear the worst for the poor tanks.. ;

The first i believe, when the Marine Corps went in on the highways. The abrams were HUGE help. during the occupation Abrams were still used but the cramped roads made it hard, and were used to send Canister and HEAT rounds into buildings at almost point blank range

Canister Shells- A special tank shell used by the M1A1 and above, this shell has multiple ball bearings a little smaller than your fist. Effectivly turning the the 120 smoothbore into a giant shotgun. Good against buildings, infantry and other soft targets

again my original point:

tanks are very vulnerable these days, even if it's a high end tank.

I sent the Leopard 2 up hil INDIA and it was gone pretty much as fast as any cheap previous generation tank. Any tank was just 'meat', though they did help me win the battle thanks to a little extra firepower and when those threeT-80 showed up, I peed my pants every time pretty much.

Oh hell yes tanks are still worth the money, but you want to focus on using infantry primarily as they are the core of your force. Armour was initially devised as an infantry support unit, and still is to this day, the tank can fight others of its own kind, but is mainly designed to support the advance of the infantry and deal with other tanks.

Can you do without heavy tanks and play well? Yes. But if positioned correctly and you deploy them at the right time, with support, they can be enormously effective. I've had T80U and Abrams rack up a dozens of kills, and turn the tide of critical firefights.

Its good to know that if the enemy tries to rush you with cheaper units, you have a heavy tank that can accurately place devastating fire on them as they struggle to get close enough to flank you. Dont let that happen, dont let ATGMs hit you first, and youre golden.
