There is a point where your character is suppose to be not sure who they are, but that shouldn't last very long. You start off as a dragon slayer, and after running into a fatally wounded dragon knight are told that Damian and the Black Ring are the real threat, after which Talana makes you a dragon knight initiate. Zandalor then shows up to confirm that the Black Ring is the real threat and set you on the path to become a full dragon knight and defeat Damian.
What little you need to know from the first two games is described in various books (especially a couple of the 'history of' series), or you can check out the topic below and see if that helps make sense of what is going on in Divinity 2.

Steam did remove DKS shortly after they added the Developer's Cut. I'm not sure why they didn't remove the original release of D2:ED, as well, except that there were some changes made in the remastered version (ie most anti-dragon shields removed from the flying fortresses), so there may be some people who would prefer the original.
The game's overall rating is firmly positive and it's Larian Studios' first attempt at a third-person RPG if I'm correct there. I think Divinity II offers so much, just as much as DD really. Although, the game is linear; it has no replay value. But, there are little glitches (none, that I know of) and it impresses me deeply that the game offers a lot of customisability. I remember spamming Flame Wall as a warrior and boy, that skill is OP! :-)
I'm still unsure whether going back to isometric games with regards to Original Sin is really the way 'forward' though. :-/
I intend to go back and try again soon though, as I was really enjoying it.
