Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA Localization Update
Hello everyone,

My name is Alan Costa and I’m a Senior Associate Producer here at NIS America.
I'm heading up the Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA revision project directly under our president, Mr. Takuro Yamashita.

I’ve started this blog series to keep you all apprised of our progress for the revision and plan to make this a weekly update.

So, what exactly are we doing with this revision? Well, as NISA President Mr. Yamashita mentioned in his message, we are addressing the localization of Ys VIII from the ground up including the below:
  • Reviewing and revising the translation with a new translator
  • A complete re-edit of the script (voiced and unvoiced) as well as corrections to item names and descriptions with a new editor
  • Voice re-recording
  • Debugging the new build
We also intend to incorporate external feedback and I’ll be sharing more details on what exactly that entails in a later update.

This is going to come as no surprise to many of you, but after beginning this revision, we have realized that due to the scope of this undertaking, we will unfortunately not be able to release by the end of this month as we had originally intended.

I don't want to throw out a hard date then have to backtrack again, but, barring any unforeseen issues, we are currently looking to get this out early next year.

On that note, as we want this version to be the definitive release of the title, we will be holding the PC version back to coincide this release as well.
While this does constitute a further delay of the PC version, please rest assured that this time will be used to further optimize the game.

Please feel free to comment on this thread if you have any additional questions and we'll be sure to get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you so much for reading and please look forward to another update next week!

Alan

Thanks for the update. Wouldn't it be possible to release it as is then update the localization via patches?

First I want to say that I appreciate your communication and plans to make this a weekly update blog.

Even though it's quite sad to hear that the release date for the PC version will be pushed even further away, I'd rather have a game with a well done script and translation. So please take your time!

I'm interested in helping here. I was already interested in beta testing but was too late for the signup, so I'm looking forward to the details in another update.

Thank you for the transparency here. I actually feel a lot better about this now.

I really hope this can lead to some positive changes in the company. I genuinely love and care for a lot of the series NISA releases, but stuff like this as well as various other jobs done by NISA really make me second guess supporting the company. Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad that this fix is happening, but you guys really can't afford to let something like this happen again. Previous releases have already made people swear off buying NISA localized games, and things can only get worse if games continue to be released in a state where a full retranslation is necessary. This counts even more for a series that has been wonderfully translated by another company up until this point, and now has had a botched release by your company.

TL;DR I'm glad this game is getting fixed but this game should not have had to be fixed.

Is the pc version still going to be full priced even after this long?

When you hit the rock bottom, the only way to go is up, i suppose, so good luck, NISA, you have a long climb ahead of you, if you want to redeem yourselves in the eyes of your customers.
I just hope to remember that this game exists by the time it is released... oh well, at least i have mortal empires to sink my time into...

I just wonder what Falcom thinks of this. I wouldn't be surprised if they never work with NISA again.

I can only hope. I mean, it's been a long while since I've seen such an incompetent localization job. If it's not the most incompetent localization I've seen, that is.

Even a small localization company (even group) is more competent than NISA.

I wonder what XSEED thinks of this, personally.

While none of this is ideal, I do think a lot of you are making this out to be a way bigger issue than it is. Delays happen, especially when making video games.

Game was in development for years, so what is an extra 3 months? Play other games until it releases, like you have been. For years.
