Probably people prefer to be given clear goals and achievements. Patrician IV, once you finished the tutorial campaign, doesn't ask you to do anything anymore. Like Sim City. Just build your economical empire as you desire, for as long as you desire.

It is also, like Sim City, slow paced. You need to be patient and balance very well the expansion, the risks taken (many more here) and slow accumulation of wealth. Speaking of risks, one wrong step may lead to economical disaster, ruining all your work during previous painstaking dozens of hours of gameplay.

If you like this kind of games, then it is well worth buying - it is complex and poses many challenges, especially when trying to develop your trading empire quickly. However, I'll emphasise that, the rewards system doesn't seem quite satisfying, and that may hold you from replaying it a lot. If you are not willing to take any risks (this is up to you), it may become quickly boring. And, unlike Civilization series, for instance, the game doesn't have a formal end, and you never feel like 'beating the game'.

This game has an awsome sense of reward, you just need to put in a lot of time to get it. It is also quite difficult to get good at this game, but when you do... :)

You also get a very good sense of competion when you have no town left wanting for anything and you have just about everything automated (this will take a good player over 100 hours). Then you can do it again on a harder difficulty (something I haven't done yet) :)

This is a very uniqe game and I absolutely love it, might give you a bit of a headache though.

Harder than you average game, teaches the basics of supply/demand. Still much simplified than life hehe.

This is my first trading game and it's pretty satisfying. Actually, let me take that back. Patrician III was the first but this version has small changes and graphical improvements. The only other trading games I've played are EVE Online (yes, it's partly a trading game among other things). Patrician however is much easier and allows you to understand the concepts.

I would recommend do play Patrician III, because you can play it offline without the need to create an account for Kalypso. It'a available DRM-Free from GOG.
