Why such a low metascore rating?
This game looks interesting but I'm turned off by such a low rating. Can anybody who has played this catch me up on why it is so poorly rated and if its worth playing?

Well it is no action game at all. Even the fights with ships are very smooth. But who loves a good trading game with building the city and lots of other stuff will love this game. Couse its all about a good plan/traderroute/beattherighttimeattherightplace/Buy-build the right buildings/ships
I love it :P

Well, it's also a Kalypso game...whilst they seem to be getting a bit better, they like taking thier old games and remaking them with barely any innovation. Tropico 1 = Tropico 3, right down to the special option choices for buildings. There's something about thier games that are somehow both exciting, but then as time goes on, boring. They need more options and (for sequels) innovation.

I actually wish more developers would do that. So many times games are updated and the changes to game play just mess it up when all it really needed is modernization of the graphics and UI.

don't know why metascore is low ... however if you enjoy business sim this game is excellent for that ! trade ! trade !! make money !! become the big boss and own city !! awesome game for me !!
i just ask myself one thing : why did i get this game only now !! ???
it's a must have for me !
thanks humble bundle !

Because it is lame and clumsy. Like pretty much all Kalypso games the trade for the nice graphics (and without any sarcasm: they are adorable) is a lack of depth and balance in the game mechanics. There are nifty things one can do, but one does not do it, since the gain from them is too diffuse to calculate whether there is profit in them. So basically one just plays the same strategy once it works until the game is over.

I find it a bit boring compared to the Patrician 3... now those where the days \(^^,)/

lack of innovation is my vote too for low metascore. and frustration/lack of innovation too with the battle engine. It is no Empire Total War ship fighting but it could have been atleast something like from Port Royale or even old Pirates! -game.

I autoresolve fights because i just cant bother with them and on the longer run it does take it's toll on this game. Nevertheless it was a good buy but the price point may be in question for some.

I know it is kinda late to reply to this thread, but i do not know is it a good idea to buy Patrician IV ?? i read in Patrician III forums that Kalypso developers are not going to support Patrician III with updates and patches because they are into new projects.
In fact, all the reviews are old and they are not updated.
Are Patrician IV worth buying now after all the patches and updates ???

Sure if you get it cheap. got mine in a bundle so it's a positive despite everything. If i had paid some AA+ title price then i would be furious. My hours on this game marks how far you get when you enjoy everything except the bad parts.

I actually don't think this game is worth buying, even on a 100% discount... I honestly, wish I hadn't. I got it months/years ago >.> Only reason I come back to forums at all is to try and convince people not to get it. It is the single worst sequel game I've ever played and is a total disgrace to the legacy that Patrician III left. Why they didn't simply take the extra ship designs they used in this game and sell them as a Patrician III DLC, I have NO idea. That was literally the ONLY thing they acceptably expanded on as far as I could tell.

It does focus a lot more on trading, I'll give it that, HOWEVER, all of the other features from PIII are dumbed town to the extreme. Or at least that is how it feels from my perspective, as someone that's played PattyIII as well. In fact most of those old features are missing... ENTIRELY!

More boats, but less options. There's zero depth to Patrician IV, no character, no soul, nothing that makes a really good and unique game what it is. The graphics are enhanced, and I can't even honestly say that anything actually looks better than it did previously. Oh and combat is teadiously slow, monotonous and down right boring. In PIII, I at least thought it was fairly lively...

Of course, that is all in my humble opinion as a PC gamer and I'm sure some people will disagree. I have tried plenty of sequal games in my time that promise to carry the legacy that their predacessor(s) have left, such as X-Rebirth, Rome II, ect... Many failed, but this is the first time I've actually felt angry enough to get actively pissy about it.... which reminds me I should write a review, if I haven't already...

Interesting. Well i have heard similar stories but have not played P3 so my 'recommendation' is indeed 'as-is' without a reference to older games.

1. It's a step backwards from Patrician III in most ways besides graphics
2. Store page doesn't mention the fact that you need to sign up to a Kalypso account
3. This process is often unreliable as you can see from some other posts.

Those are probably some other reasons.
