Dark Descent Gameplay>Story
Machine for Pigs Gameplay<Story

Both, and make up your own mind. They are pretty different, but not so much on their core, The Dark Descent have some features that A Machine for Pigs don't have, and that's the "big difference", and the most debated issue by "haters".
At the end they are similar in mechanics, the stories are both interesting and told in different ways, The Dark Descent is like a Lovecraft novel, with supernatural elements, A Machine for Pigs is pretty much a Poe poem. Both are gothic but in their own way. I might suggest you to don't fall in the "It's not like The Dark Descent anymore!" hate train when you play A Machine for Pigs, and you should just enjoy itself for it's own, a different game from a different developer settled in the same universe. Like two same movies from two different directors, two points of view on the same argument.
All the rest is just forum rant.

The Dark Descent is a horror game with quest elements, Machine for Pigs - Adventure with a half-life feel, when all the solutions are located within one level, so that you won't spend much time and quickly proceed further.

Don't listen to illgib. A machine of pigs was trash. Get the original if you want a true horror experience.

There is no "original". There is TDD and AMFP. 2 games. 2 Developers. 2 Stories. 1 thing that connects both. And 2 great stories.

Sorry but are you kidding? I barely noticed the story in the first one and the second one just had a crappy "pig factory" story.

if you get the journals, the 2nd story is rather interesting. Curiose on where the orb ended up

Well, I'm sorry if I say so, but you only understand the story if you think about what you read and hear. Play the games again. And focus on the story and not the scare.

Very true, both games had intriguing stories. Probably the best part of both of them. But sadly, AMFP seemed to had lost something that TDD had. The narrative was still there, but the gameplay that made TDD memorable was completely omitted in AMFP. So, if anyone happens to be wondering which one to buy, TDD all the way.

I played it mostly in offline mode so I don't get Steam messages. It doesn't record games in offline mode which is why a lot of my games have "0 hours on record".

I play horror games for the scare.... I play story games for the story and yes the story in the new one was awful as I said.
