Oh god why did I buy this ;_; I don't wanna play it.. I don't wanna.. please no...
I've been putting it off forever, but I finally got it. My first playthrough ever.
Aside from a couple 'lets play' things here and there, I have no idea whats gonna happen.
"Why not?" I said
"Its cheeaapp" I said
"C'mon, it can't be THAT bad...."

I'm not even 10 minutes in and i'm about to ♥♥♥♥ myself.
Its the atmosphere. That creeping dread. ...and oh god that ♥♥♥♥ing noise when you're in the darkness. What the ♥♥♥♥ is that? Its like a crunching.. clacking.. horrible thing that just digs into my head and I want it to stop ;_;

I don't WANT to play this ♥♥♥♥, but I need to. I've put it off too long. Gotta man up. Stop being a wuss.
At least tell me.. is the ending satisfying? Is it worth going through?

I really have to question you if you're saying that The Grudge, let -alone- Silent Hill: Downpour, are more scary than this game.

I think I jumped once throughout all of Downpour, and I played it alone, late at night, in a nearly pitch black room, when I was jittery and had been up for nearly 36 hours. It was a little creepy here and there, but really far from scary; I was just caught off guard / alarmed at one point.

The Grudge, well, it's a pretty typical "jump scare" movie.

Amnesia's fear comes from the fact that you don't -see- the monsters that much. It's a game which understands that the -threat- of a monster is just as terrifying (and in many cases more so) than the monster itself. The fact that you can't fight back makes the fear all the worse.

That said, to answer the OP's question, yes. The game's worth playing for the story; which I found pretty interested, even if it is a little too heavily foreshadowed near the end. The -ending- itself isn't all that awesome, but the story itself, particularly daniel as a character, are well worth the journey.

EDIT: That said, here are some basic ways to "stay calm" in Amnesia and continue playing.

#1: Monsters like to spawn right after you do something important. Unlock a door, pick up an item, solve a puzzle, ect. About 80% of the enemies appear ONLY after you've met one of those criteria, and they then appear pretty damn fast after you've done it. It's easy to prepare for their arrival.

#2: Monsters will always spawn when they are easily escapable. With maybe... two exceptions in the entire game (Guardian not withstaning), this rule is true. There will always be a convient hidey-hole, a closet, or some very easy and obvious place for you to duck into and wait it out.

#3: A very specific track of music plays when a monster is nearby. Just sit-tight and wait for the music to stop; at which point the monster has despawned.

Basically, knowing those things, so long as you close doors behind you when you go into a room, you'll pretty much never have to worry about actually dying. And knowing those things will make you a lot more comfortable.

I've been watching playthroughs of custom stories and they make me jump, but I always laugh after. This game isn't scary until it catches you off guard.

Am I the only one who finished this game?

I played for like 4 hours, divided on 4 separated nights of 1 hour each. I couldn't man up enough to play more than that. Must try again... One of this days.

I spend more time on custom stories. I haven't really been scared by the actual game yet.

I would say, though there is closure, the journey is the destination. Every creaking door, moaning voice, moving shadow in the darkness. The grinding of Daniel's teeth as he sits sobbing in a corner. :) It is worth it for that. I love any game that can scare the pants off me.

a good horror game is one that you don't want to play because it's too terrifying to bear

Even though when I'm standing in a closet and the monster is gone I wait for a good 10 minutes before coming out to relieve myself of fear.

The clacking and clicking noise is your sanity draining. If you wanted to play a horror game, you got the right one. It's SUPPOSED to scare you. Still. After like five minutes of gameplay, I chickened out.

This is the only game that really does this to me. It's so well done I want to finish it out of respect for the developers. But I don't want to touch it because I am such a pansy and I CAN'T I CAN'T NOPE NOPE NOPE NOT DOING THAT.

My solution, play with friends and start a voice chat or video chat. If someone knows what they're doing, it's even better as they can mess with you and make it scarier. (And just a little bit of guidance, but not enough to spoil it).

Haven't beaten it yet. I'm in the prison where the monster chases you around and just completely freaking out.
