How do I install a custom story?
I've seen a video on how to do it, but I just don't get what to do and where to put the file for the custom story.

Gave me some trouble to. All you have to do is go to moddb.com and click on mods. Find amnesia in the bar and pick one you like, it'll either be a .zip or a .rar file. You have to extract the file (you can find online converters if you dont have one, I used 7-zip) and then go to computer, program files, steam, steamapps, common, and then amnesia. Click on amnesia and scroll down until you find the custom story folder and then drag the extracted folder into that! Hope that helps!

Yeah it either goes in"custom_stories" folder if its just a regular CS or if it's what they call a full conversion mod it all goes in the main folder for ATDD.

It's actually pretty simple:

  • 1) You need to download a custom story from somewhere.
    I recommend Moddb
  • 2) You will need to extract that archive you just got put the contents somewhere safe!
  • 3) Now you will need to locate your custom stories folder!
This should be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\amnesia the dark descent
  • 4) Now you will have to put the folder you extracted into the "custom_stories"
Make sure you extract the folder that should have "Maps" in it
  • 5) You're done! Go load Amnesia and press the Custom Story button in the menu!

In the case this wasn't helpful, you can always search it on youtube, or in google.

Why doesn't my computer have a "Steam" folder with all those things? It usually had it, I remember having browsed it sometime before. Maybe something changed after the most recent Steam update? How can I install the custom stories in this situation?

If you have Steam installed on your computer, you should have a folder with Steam files in it. Same thing with Amnesia, if you have it installed in your computer, there should be Amnesia files somewhere on your computer. Try searching these files again; if you still can not find them, then you have a problem beyond the comprehension of the human being, and I won't be able to help you. Seriously, you MUST have the files, otherwise, you computer is cursed. Sorry.

That's what I though and that's why I was intrigued, especially since I had actually browsed those files before. Turns out, it was true, I do have the files. The thing is, they were "hidden", and my computer doesn't show them in the "search" option as it used to do if I recall correctly. I have a folder C:/Archivos_de_Programa wich DOESN'T include the steam files, and a C:/Archivos_de_Programa_(x86) wich DOES. This is confusing but, whatever, I can play custom stories now. :D

So on Moddb when you download, do you download it from the recommended Desura instalation or do you use something else?

Desura is actually another mod website, but I don't know if it has any direct relation to Moddb. As far as I know both are good mod websites and you can download the custom stories from any of them, but I only downloaded from Moddb, so I don't know very much about Desura.

Desura worked very well, just sign up and use the Steam-like browser to find what you want, download it and it works!
Dr. Doctor Jan 31, 2013 @ 5:06pm
Okay, thanks for clarifying my thoughts in relation to Desura!

Not sure if this part matters but when a screen pops up asking if you want to put it through something else (it'll give you a list of everything installed on your computer) I just clicked on steam to have it go through. It might work despite that but that's what I did! :)
