But I suppose they did this on purpose to lure in more casual audience.
I never got scared from the monsters because I found out early how to avoid monsters. Hide in a room, go in corner, Crouch, and stare at ground (and cry). Even when the monster breaks down the door he won't kill you as long you don't look at them.
Honestly, it is scarier game when you get in the mood for it. A dark quiet room, playing alone, with surround sound speakers. It adds the creepness factor.
The best moments were the chase scenes (which were harmless if you played the commnentary) and unexpected visits from the monster.
I agree. I'd be lying if I said this game never scared me, but hiding from monsters is just too easy like you said. I also think the monsters shouldn't be so scripted when they spawn. You should use stealth to make your way through the castle instead of only hiding when a monster spawns.
But yeah, if I happened to die in the same spot once or twice, I knew what was coming and it wasn't really scary after that. If I knew I was going to die I just ran to the monsters to save time. I usually got back in the mood pretty fast after those incidents and the game remained interesting.
I didn't even find the monsters too scripted or easy to avoid, I never knew what to expect. Hell, I didn't even realize there were different types of monsters until the very end. Not being able to stare at them makes them a lot scarier, too. I also thought I could just crouch in any dark corner to avoid them, but some actually found me (approaching slowly) and hit me in the back, that made me jump off my chair a few times.
At no point did I ever think this game was scary, at no point did I panic or feel threatened in the least. And I made a serious attempt at allowing myself to become fully emersed.
One of the biggest problems I had was with the audio. In a game like this the audio is going to be really important but I was having an issue where if I wasn't facing the source of the sound, it'd get cut off. Like if I was looking directing at running water, I'd hear it, but if I turned to my left, it'd cut off like it was never there. I have a surround sound system for my desktop and have had no problems with any other games, so this may have ruined it for me a lot.
The monsters are not scary, they are not even a threat. The monster AI is really stupid and once you figure out how it works, it's almost a waste of time. Eventhe few times I did die, the game removes the monsters when you respawn, so I can just walk through the section. The placement of the monsters are really predictable.
Further, several videos that show game play are very misleading. There used to be a gameplay video where it showed players hiding in closets, or using chairs to prop doors closed, or even throwing furniture at monsters to slow them down. Only once in the game did I ever have to hide in a closet and I believe that it was part of the actual game's tutorial. You cannot use furniture to block doors or passages and I don't even bother with trying to throw furniture.
Scary? No way. Boring? Completely.
