An interesting game but could be much better if it would be more complex and polished. It's also very clear that this game was quite tight on budget.
I'd classify this game rather as something like a scary journey than a typical game. But it isn't as scary as some say because it's schematic.

It's not perfect, but this is one of my favorite games.

A: 9 - well done, scariest part of the game
G: 7 - wasn't as scary after noticing some monster/death mechanics, puzzles were mostly good but not always the most intuitive, I liked the sanity mechanic
S: 8 - that back room music is so calming
S: 9 - I think it has interesting character depth, and there are a lot of sublte details that are easy to miss or ignore (I wish I had noticed sooner how much story was actually in the loading screens). The ending leaves a bit to be desired, but I'm giving this category a bonus point for including a pdf of short stories about the side characters (under the "Remember" tab on the launcher).
LD: 8 - don't have much to say other than I liked it.

Configuring everything as the game dictates (dark room, headphones and correct gamma adjustment), I find it like this:

Atmosphere: 10 - Practically all the time the atmosphere does its job (or more like, the atmosphere does all the job). It gets calm sometimes to give some rest, but most of the time the stress is there; and it increases itself further and further until there is little chance of not getting scared. Something nice is that if your sanity is low enough, the paintings change from being boring to creepy (specially Alexander's portrait).

Gameplay:8 - Do you run from monsters? Yes, but that's not all you can do. You can also hide, distract them, close the doors behind you as you escape (although the stress of the moment can make it difficult), and there is a kind of monster you can actually kill. The puzzles are OK, and the sanity feature is excellent.

Sound:9 - The memories, the monsters, the shadow; all of them fit. Damn that monster persecution screech!

Story:8 - The story is twisted, and it kinda makes sense. Some characters are direct references to real people. Putting some effort in understanding the story makes the game creepier. For example, the torture devices part is sick (specially because they are real-life torture devices), and yet, restrained. There are multiple endings.

Level Design:9 - It has a variety in design. Most of them are dark corridors, and a few are mazes. But you get a couple of more open areas, and even a part outside.

I felt the atmostphere very creepy and scary, but only without light or oil.
I honestly wouldnt play amnesia if it wasnt for one thing; that i am able to troll the monsters (lol, i wouldnt be able to play if it wasnt for that, its so scary!)
I hate hate hated the sound, it was excruciating scary, and its what makes me only be able to play 30 min at a time if i havent trolled a monster so hardcore that i'm still laughing when I should be scared
I loved the story, it was so carefully wound and had so much carefully done foreshadowing.
I thought the castle could use some work, the levels could have more items and more interactable things. Love amnesia though.

A: 10, can't beat the undeniably horrifying sound and visual design, lighting effects, etc
G: 8, some of the puzzles get kind of obtuse, and the stuff you have to to at the end is slightly confusing but overall very good puzzle stealth adventure
Sound: 10, almost want to give it an 11. Even from the title screen there's just this feeling of dread that comes with every note.
Story: 7, some of the lore gets kind of wonky, and I wish they could have better defined the stuff they put in the docs, but they are worth a read.
LD: 8, the environments feel labyrinthine and suitable to a massive castle with much more terrifying contents below, however there are a few places you can get lost in without being scared...just confused.

Additionally, I'm with catseith - it is absolutely essential to play Amnesia in a dark, quiet room alone with the gamma properly configured. Not doing so will reduce the atmosphere and spook factor by more than one notch. Good game.

Overall pretty scary but you get braver as you go on because the atmosphere makes you expect way more jumpscares than there actually are. Good game though.
