Is DOTA2 free to play or just watch?
I thought DOTA2 was free so I downloaded it but all it lets me do is spectate and says I can purchase it for 30 bucks.

Is it really spectate only unless you play? Or did I not do something right?

The spectator client (thats what u have) is for free and for everybody availible.
Dota 2 (the game) is in the beta atm, but u can buy an invite, if u want, in the store.

Don't trust what Tear says, most of those will be scams or viruses. There's a survey a while down the store page where you can apply for an invite. Takes a while to come in, though-- a long while. Or you can buy it. Other choice is to wait for release. I've heard November, but, well, Valve Time.

This. Your best bet would be to sign up for the beta and wait.

No one knows when it will come out of beta, as Valve likes to take their time and not release a game until everything's ready.

Sign up http://www.dota2.com/survey/experience/ and wait a bit, you'll get an invite. Or you could buy one. The spectator client you have now will become the full game eventually , one way or another.

Oh ok. I thought the full game had been released, I didnt know it was in beta still. When I saw it show up in my steam list of games I thought it was released.

So basically whats going on now is just the beta still? And if I just wait the full game will get released and it will then be free to play 100%?

Dota 2 is still in beta because the game is simply not finished yet (features and heroes missing, bugs to fix...they are still experimenting with the balancing and I guess they wanna build some good server infrastructure). But once it is released it will be 100 % free to play (you´ll only have to play a lot to get some nice cosmetic items for free..but those are just that: cosmetic).

let me see if I understand... We have to pay to play the BETA, but the full game will be free to play? dafuq?

Thanks for the replies folks, I was severly confused on this since it showed up in my steam list but had a price tag on it. Ill just wait then. I am looking forward to trying it though, I never did get around to playing the original DOTA.

Im sure its to try and recoup some money considering it will be free for everyone. So only the hardest of the hardcore will pay to play in the beta.

Im assuming that valve is testing this hard and having people who will pay to play it means they will get the most dedicated players who will put in time and effort to the game and help make it much better than say making the beta free and just having millions of people just playing it but not giving feedback, reporting bugs and trying to improve the game. Paying testers will be a lot more serious about it.

Doesnt matter to me since Ill just wait for it to go live.
