There is some overreacting in your words, but I agree. It's pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weird/strange/stupid.

I think it is just because LAN provides a better connection. But yeah, you cannot play offline on any Steam game. I'm surprised this doesn't bother many people, considering the recent X-Box One controversy.

You can actually play offline in most Steam games. IIRC you can even play dota offline, but only with bots.

Really? I'll have to look this up. Thanks (unless you mean offline mode which can be selected in the friends tab which doesn't count). :)

No, like proper offline (without internet) I used it a lot when my connection got dodgy. It's pretty wonky, but worked fine for me. You just need to launch game one time in online mode, and then you're all set (unless of course it has always-online DRM)

VERY FAST EDIT: Just checked offline-mode with Dota 2. Only practice mode works, so yeah. Bots only.

The whole point of Lan is that you can potentially have a much stable and smoother internet connection then what you'd normally would have.
I remember Lan being an easy way back in the day to connect games together, before internet became fairly normal for most people. During the Diablo 1 days i think.
