Why charge for tournaments?
You can just watch them for free afterwards on youtube or watch them live on twitch sometimes. 5 dollars is a way too much to watch someone else play a video game. Not to mention everyone all the overpriced store items, for that matter.

I'm not paying a penny for extras in this game.

And that's your choice. I chose to buy a tournament pass to watch in-game because you can move around and see whatever you want and listen to the commentary too. When you watch on youtube, you are restricted to only what the commentater shows you.

They charge in order to *make money*.

If you're against people making money, then I hope you find a better society to live in some day, but in this one, we do lots of things for profit.

Specifically, in this case, the money goes to the people holding the tournament, the people commenting on the games, and ultimately some goes to the prize money for the tournaments (possibly indirectly).

Valve also gets a cut, which gives them a revenue stream for Dota 2.

As you point out, you don't *have* to participate in this. You can opt out. But the fact that you're posting here at all suggests that you have some interest in this extra, which means it's worth something to you.

Maybe it's not worth the asking price, to you, in which case, sure turn it down.

And I bought an "overpriced" courier because I play support all of the time, I want to support Dota, and I liked the look and wanted something different.

I have poured so much money into this game, but it's undoutably my most played game and I got the invite for free so *shrug*.

Keeps the game running, devs working, tournaments happening so why not? If you want to pay for items or tickets then do, otherwise don't.

They charge money for other sporting events. Dota is no diffrent.

No one is forcing you to spend money, so don't! Stop complaining. It's a free-to-play game. If you want nicer things you can spend a little money here and there. Paying for a tournament shows your support for the game and sometimes you even have the chance to get items dropped while watching.

@crinkles thats my point they are already making money off the items, why lot let the tournaments be free so noobs and pros can get more interest in the game and thefore play it more, therefore want to buy items more, therefore make more money. They don't need to charge.

Dota was free for a very, very, long time, and I'm not against them making money, just that there comes a point where too much is too much.

I think Proto has the best point here. They charge money for sporting events. Entertainment.
