where is this lag coming from
i've tried to fix this over the past week and i still dont know why i'm still lagging horribly. I've pinged my telstra modem from my pc and i get a response time that averages around 5-6ms spiking at 15-25 occasionally and 100 very very rarely (wireless connection). I've pinged syd.valve.net (im from WA, australia) and it averages 115ms and spikes at about 250 every now and then but on DotA 2 it sometimes reaches 1000ms and averages around 150ms constantly spiking to about 200-400ms(when i refresh it constantly). Why? anyway i can fix this.

Find a tracerouting website and see if there is any particular part of the connection where there may be a bottleneck. it wont fix the problem if it is external to your PC, but may help identify a problem on your end.

I will try it tomorrow thanks for your suggestion. :)

I'd expect <1ms ping to my own router, tbh. Maybe WiFi does add that much overhead, but i don't think it's normal or desirable to have such a wildly fluctuating ping on the very first hop. Doesn't bode well for the rest of the journey.

That said, I and several others I know have been getting terrible ping to DotA recently - with lag spikes as you describe. So I don't think it's just you.

Another thing you can check is if your computer is overheating. My brother was also getting horrible lag but once we cleaned out the fan it was gone.

if someone in your family is streaming netflix or downloading stuff. your lag will go up. always check speedtest to check your ping before you play.

or ask your family not to watch netflix or download stuff when you play.
