Hopefully once he understands the basic flow of how builds work and the new map, he can then try the other heroes. Maybe even doom or terrorblade are good choices to try as well.

Since DotA punishes mistakes much more than League (from what I've heard), I would advise him to pick a durable hero and concentrate on not-dying. People will probably criticize someone more harshly for dying than for not being aggressive enough, and the more time you spend alive the easier it is to practice and learn the game.
What hero did he try to use in his first match?
Personally, I recommend Omniknight (heals and defensive abilities), Tidehunter (passive defense, large health pool, easy to use Ult), Warlock (heals, good pushing, and good ult), or Dragon Knight (stun, passive heal, fun ult).
