Dota 2 Scam Awareness
**** This is an informative post, I would not recommend attempting to try and look into the scam****

Recently a scam has plagued the Dota 2 community, so I decided to do everything they are saying you should do just to see what the actual end result is. So what is this scam you ask? The scam has 3 main parts to it
1) You will be added by a steam user, or invited to join a group such as the example shown below
DOTA 2 FREE MONEY [Letters and Numbers]
1A) They will start off with something like this: Hello I am from (website), I am a developer on this website and I would like your help.
1B) After a responce they will say something like the following, "I can choose the winner on the sight, so I need you to go to the sight and then I will set you to be the winner, I would like 30% of the cut, you can take 70% (They will say the cut is from 50-200 dollars from my experience)
* Right off the bat this should raise red flags, first of all if you could pick the winner why not simply sign up on a diffrent account using a VPN and then set yourself to the winner. This would require no user interaction nor would it require them to split the cut with someone else. I decided to ask them this question and they simply followed up with the website owner has a tracker on the developers computers so they cannot use a VPN. Fair enough, however you just admitted that this so called owner put spyware on your computer, and/or tracking cookies.

2) You go on the website
I will say this to start off, they are very smart in the way they did it, if you challange thier logic they will show you a youtube video of it "working" which is clearly fake, but they wouldn't be doing it if people didn't fall for it.
2A) You will then go to their website and log in with steam, I would not recommend ever logging into a website with steam, because steam does not control the website nor can it insure the website is safe.
2B) Enter your trade url, this ultimatly does nothing, just makes the website seem more legitimate.
2C) Do a couple of spins tell the dev you did you see a nice $50 up on the top corner after he sets it up
3) This is the end of my investigation, but I will give 2 things that I believe are the most likely to happen after.
3A option 1) After you get the $50 you will have the "ability to outsourse to paypal or some other online tranaction.
3B) Log into paypal or the other online tranaction, they will most likely not redirect you to the actual sight and have you sign into your account while still on their website. This means that you will be selecting how you are going to get the money, and then providing them with the user name and password of your account. When logging into websites, most use a set number for your password, when you type it in it checks to see if the passwords numbers are the same as theirs. This essentially means that even if you are hacked into hackers see something like this: 832473298472 instead of (Password) so they cannot log into accounts across the web.
3C) With this information they go to the place you chose to be paid out to log into all your accounts and send the money to their account, or with your username and password they attempt to use it on every sight to see how many accounts they can get access to, and then saying something like this, " We have your accounts for (Every website you use the same password for), and if you do not pay us X ammount we will keep these accounts."

3A option 2) They manually install a trojan horse
First of all, if you do not know what a trojan hose is I would strongly recommend reading about it here: https://us.norton.com/cybercrime-trojansspyware

3B) They install the trojan horse, they have 3 diffrent paths they can go with this I will explain them all
Path 1: They go into your systems files and attempt to find any useful financing information ( tax returns, credit card numbers ect)
Path 2: They go into your files again but this time they attempt to sell any information they can find about you in your files
Path 3: This is the worst one possible, Ransomware. What is ransome ware you ask? It essentially takes control of your entire computer, locking you out with no access. Essentially the hacker is in 100% control of your system and what happens to it. The only thing its used for is saying something like this, Unless you pay X ammount to by X day, I will not release my control on your computer forcing you to buy a new one, and if the hacker really wanted, they could just do something like deleting system 32 (which you should NEVER do by the way).

I know that the dota 2 has people who will not understand this scam and fall for it, that is why I am making this post. If you know any more detail about the scam, please do inculde it in the comments.
Also remember, after they have your steam account link the best you can do is report all their accounts for Scamming or user harassment, I personally just leave the invites open and report all the group administrators. This will be a problem until Valve decides enough is enough and bans all the accounts so just deal with it and don't fall for the scam.

Too bad the people who get scammed don't visit the forum until AFTER they get scammed.

True, but hopefully there might be a few people who do some research into it before blindly trusting someone who says stuff like this

The goal is to raise awareness for the scam. I could care less if other people have done it in the past.

Make a guide instead.

This is why I isolate myself and never go first in trades. They either agree to my terms or not in trading, I don't really care.
