After the great open world Red Faction Guerilla, Volition take the series in another direction. Stripping the open world in favour of a tight, linear structure turned a lot of people of to this game as did the focus on fighting alien bugs rather than a human threat. If you can play beyond the first third of the game however up to when you get back to the surface of Mars the game does open up a little into more open canyons with some great vehicular destruction.
The game features the meatiest story in the series and follows directly on from the SyFy movie Red Faction origins with you playing another decendant in the Mason family responsible for allowing the Martian atmosphere processor to be destroyed by Cultists and in turn letting lose a whole nest of alien creatures from underground. The story ties back into the previous games and playing them first would be benifical.
Weapons are inventive and forceful and are fun to use, especially the mechs and tanks and their respective missions.
Visuals have gotten better from the last game and there is still destruction of buildings but this time you can bring anything back with the new Nano rebuilder to recreate destroyed stair ways etc so you are not stuck trying to climb the geometry to make progress after a fire fight which was a problem in guerilla.
The only problem is the Aliens are used a lot and are thrown against you overwhelmingly at some points so it can get a little repetative fighting them again and again.
Overall if you're coming back here for more of Guerilla you will be dissapointed but if you enjoyed the first game's structure or like linear shooters in general theres fun to be had here.
