Is there anything I could recommend for Homefront? The sound track is good, and the game is mercifully short.
Bad things however are aplenty ranging from a dead story to bad and broken mechanics.
Firstly the story while a novel one for video games Starts out well paced, but never seems to tell or have a clear objective till the last level. I didn't even discover my character was a pilot until a good portion into the game. The demonization of the North koreans is well done but then they go and undermine what they had accomplished. They recreate the nazi's then in the middle of the game you sympathise with them during a shooting with some crazy conservative nutjobs. Showing that the only thing more evil than the nazi's are white republicans. Pretty much in 4 hours (game length) you come to hate the monsters then feel sorry for them, then are left with no decent villians and pretty much no reason to fight other than Murica. Ending it on a bland note. other than the 3rd best thing in the game. THE MAIN CHARACTER DIES. Great setup but poor delivery.
What you thought this would be you? don't be ridiculous you are just a pilot that does everything but pilot. No this is none other than Captain A-hole. I honestly got done with the game like 10 minutes ago and I have forgotten all of the characters but this guy. You can expect him to simply shout and yell at you and everyone else in the game to do whatever. He feels no compassion for anyone, only rage and vengeance. the second you are suppossed to regroup he will begin yelling at you to group up as you search for any gun other than the smg. He continues to do this every 20 seconds. It is one of the most irratating things I've seen designed into a video game. Thankfully at the end he finishes his annoying life so I can feel at least some satisfaction out of this game.
The Player Character
You are a Pilot. you are captured by north koreans then broken out by freedom fighters. You are also, apparently, the one and only pilot in this colorado town. You are faceless, and the only time anyone ever talks to you is to make you do labor.
Essentially you play as Sam in the lord of the Rings. Your job, as the ultimate sidekick, is to do all of the things nobody else wants to do. Operate a self driving car that seems to not be able to target vehicles ( but one does it at the end of the game just fine) you operate the sniper rifle as Capt. A-hole walks you through. Here's a question, why doesn't Capt. A-hole do it? He knows what to look for, why train a pilot to snipe on a very important mission. You use the missle launchers and it is always your job to kill everyone with a rocket/EMP launcher, Sniper, Mounted gunners, Jeeps, APC's helicopters, Tanks and whatever they feel like throwing you into. You do in fact operate a helicopter. once. For about 15 minutes. in that time you do get to reinact Mission Impossible for absolutely no reason. You fly through a tunnel because the game won't let you fly over the hill.
On the last level (as a capable pilot) you get to run around with guns and shoot, instead of pilot, cuz that makez zenz. There are dozens of helicopters around and they use you as a foot soldier.
It's like call of duty but all of the controls are a little wobblybubbly feel. never really got used to it. All of the guns shoot really fast and bad guys can take you down with a lucky quick burst. Also don't expect anyone to cover you or kill bad guys. In fact just assume that every grenade thrown will land in your back pocket while being shot at by every concievable person in Colorado. Usually games like these will take away your team mates to show you how much more difficult a situation is with out them. when this game does it, I couldn't tell a difference.
They suck I found 2 that I liked, the m16 because it's semi auto without a scope, and the m249 because no one knows how to suppress (or really kill anyone) in this game so that's another role I had to fullfill. With all of the special gear and forced sniper sections, screw your 2 gun rule. Guns are random and there are practically no good ammo pick ups till the last level (Practically infinite Lmg ammo) Then you have the issue of not 1 or 2 or even 3 m4 types. You have 4. and you have the ACR on top of that. What is the best part you may ask? None of the ammo is cross compatible. so if you find that beloved m16, you have to find another m16 to restock on ammo. Honestly I blame this on the Captain A-hole. You are a pilot. How are you supposed to know what ammo goes where?
At the end of the day this is really what kills and makes this game drag. You have quite literally all of the downsides of a quicktime event without being told it's even happening. I died multiple times because I had not moved fast enough or I shot a dude during a mandatory stealth mission after I was ordered to but the event hadn't triggered because, apparently, Captain A-hole wasn't finished talking. there is also the game being stupid about where you are going during the piloting mission I accidently crossed the road while following some plot related vehicles. The game immediately jumped on my case about getting back on course.
Oh the glitches, love being killed by invisible helicopters, events that don't trigger, or just general bullcrap? Then this is the game for you. Love being yelled at by capt. A-hole while he orders you to kill the 11th rocket trooper? Then this is the game for you. Do you love watching people that take interesting concepts and use them as toilet paper? Then this is the game for you. For everyone else there is really any other game.
