There are enough mods out there that almost everything can be tailored to your taste.
Asking for cool mods is like asking for good candy in a gourmet candy shop that's a city block large. People can tell you what's cool and what's not, but they will end up missing something, and in the end, only you can figure out what you want to play with the most. And you have to do the searching.

But with a few suggestions and guidelines, don't restrict your search to the Workshop. L4DMaps and Gamebanana are very viable options if you want to do a little extra work.

Doktor Haus usually releases stellar weapons, and he's even learning to animate his own stuff. I personally use his M16A2 Reborn, it's the best straight-out M16 available yet.

Yogensia/Prophet has an enormous lineup of unique melee weapons for almost any slot you want, and they are all incredibly solid. Half of my melee weapons use one of his mods.

K1CHWA is an expert texture artist, he offers a large selection fo default survivor/weapon retextures, often leaning toward the tactical and gold varieties. His re-textures also allow for the customization of head and body textures separately, which allows for a wide selection of customization for the default models. He's also released three variants of arby26's revolver.

Splinks is one of the premier modders of Left 4 Dead 2, and is largely responsible for reviving the Left 4 Dead Beta models. He offers a great number of character mods, especially those from movies or video games, a good selection of weapons, again references to video games or other bits of silliness. Almost all of his stuff is light-hearted, so he's probably not the way to go if you want serious.

With all mods, check the descriptions and comments to see if there are any problems, and read the change notes if available. Use the overall rating on sites that have that and read reviews. If you like what you see, download it. If you like what you download, leave a positive rating. Experiment with a lot of things, and most of all, have fun.
