Decompiling Valves Maps
Hi All,
I've always been interested in modifying maps, but haven't the foggiest where to start with it all.
So rather than start from scratch, I have decided to instead modify Valves existing maps.
For instance, modifying Dead Center Hotel.
Is this what I should be following?
Is it simple to de-compile the map, edit it to my liking, and then re-compile?
Or is it more difficult than that?

I note also, that it says:
  • "Releasing reproductions, modifications, or approximations of another's work without permission nor credit is frowned upon and may be considered as a copyright violation."

Should I be too worried about this? If I were to upload to the Steam Workshop, should I just give the generic "this is not mine, all copyrights to Valve etc etc" or something along those lines ?

Don't worry about it, there are a ton of version maps out there- Gladiador's HEM maps, the Dark series (Dark Center, Dark Parish), etc.

To get started, you'll want to use... bspsrc I think to decompile the map from the .bsp you have to the file (vtf or vmf or something) that the hammer world editor wants to use. Once you've finished messing with the map, if you select "run map" it will automatically generate a bsp file, which is what you need to put in your vpk. To get the missions and addons file info, try decompiling someone else's custom map just to copy their txt files as templates.

It's not exactly simple, but it's not terribly difficult either.

You should state in any description, and in the addoninfo.txt that you modified Valve’s map. That covers giving credit. Valve is unlikely to care about asking permission, because you are creating content for their game.

Decompiling is not pefect, and you may have to fix errors that creep in from the decompile process if there are any. After modifying the map, and compiling, you will likely have to rebuild the entire Nav mesh.

The easiest way to start learning about map making is youtube and google. There are plenty of tutorial videos (some better than others) on how to build various parts of levels. As well as a number of web sites dedicated to map building.
