Speed Hackers
Whats up with the speed hackers popping up and not being caught by VAC??

They are still terrible with hacks and that is hilarious but it's lame.

I did not say that YOU are an idiot, but the speed case you did not understand that is. Otherwise, why would I be mad ?

This conversation needs to be brought to the forefront of attention of the Steam community and Valve programmers. Hackers are becoming more and more prevalent across L4D2 and i've heard similarly in Counterstrike and TF2. It is the responsibility of game designers that market balanced online gameplay - to SECURE servers against imbalanced, unrestricted cheating. We need an answer from Valve and some Hackers Be Gone

I report every proven hacker that i've come across and none of them have been banned from gameplay - THIS would be a reasonable cost to them breaking the terms of use of these products.

I agree with that entirely - as an activist myself I feel that awareness is the first step to solution.

I would call on everybody that has dealt with hackers to demand further action by the steam community and valve themselves. Let the conversation begin here:

Because cheating/hacking public servers is allowed to run rampant without penalties. As a result, the value of my purchase in L4D2 has reduced drastically.

If anybody knows appropriate e-mail addresses to petition towards let me know.

The reason they arent getting caught by VAC is because VAC only looks at the normal locations for the games files. What they do is leave a legit copy of the game files in its normal location then have a modified version in a seperate location with "pointers" so the game will access those modified files. Unless they make VAC more like a virus scanner that scans an entire computer theres not much they can do about it.

There is always something that can be done - its a matter of whether or not Valve applies efforts towards the solution. Some form of what you are suggesting is far from impossible considering the rigorous, constant file management that steam is performing.

If you have files such as these pointers - that should result in ban warning, quarantine of the suspected files (move to subdir so they dont point correctly) and then eventual ban if it keeps finding these types of files.

Also reporting hackers should have some form of support team functioning - We should know when our report has been read at the very least, if they ever are.

No the things I mentioned arent impossible but they would be extremely inconvienent to the end user. VAC is heuristic which is why it is quick and simple. No one would want to sit through an entire indepth system scan before being able to play a game. As for detecting the "pointers" not only do they have legitament uses but valve software itself uses them. Nearly all source engine games share some files with them. Theyd have to rewrite the source engine and all their games to completely remove them. Basically neither method will happen.

As far as reporting there isnt much they can do from just a simple report which honestly Im glad for. Ive been onboard since cs 1.3 and have been called a hacker more times than I can count over various games and have had many threats and I assume actual reports filled against me. Do you really expect them to go out and spec every player that is reported for cheating? If there are enough reports Im sure they do some kind of investigation but random reports without true demos sent with them Im sure go to the back burner and no not youtube videos but actual demos.

Well at the very least, valve made it so people you block can't join your games. On another note I've seen a couple I've reported had their accounts banned, however it's easy to buy a new copy specially when it's only $5 most of the time. One already got vac banned, they can't eliminate hackers but they do try to take steps to prevent it, even on games that are essentially dead to them.
