If I'm not mistaken, it will automatically associate itself with Steam when you attempt to install it -- like the Steam-mandatory Call of Duty games.

Yes, you will need a steam account to play the game. It will ask you when u install from the cd if you already have an account. If you write brandonbb60 as account name there it will be in your library forever ^^

If was 30€ cheaper to buy the cd for me then buying it on steam so I did the same. (Very strange since digital distrubution should need less overhead)

all the CD is going to do is basically give you a key on your account and maybe let you install off of there, but you're going to have to download updates anyway.

the CD is pointless since you have to go through Steam anyway. might as well save yourself the trouble of getting a CD off Amazon and buy it off of Steam in about a month or less when it's 75% off again.

For retail games all you have to do is enter the key code on Steam. There's no point installing the game from the CD because you will have to download it again through Steam. All you need is the key.

After installing the CD, you'll still have to download about 8GB of files from Steam, thanxs to all the free DLC's.

Also, I suspect L4D2, will go back on sale for 5 bucks sometime in December for around 36 hours. Will likely be 14 bucks half of December, during Steam's holiday sales.
