When you download the map, where do you put it? Did you unzip it first? Did you install it correctly?

All addons, custom maps go into your Steam addons folder (including mods / skins etc.) When the map file is unzipped correctly you will get a ''VPK'' file and it will have a little Steam icon with the map name / abbreviation's.You then need to place that VPK into your C: drive /Steam addons folder.I always unzip the files outside my addons folder and then drag into my addons folder. Then I double click that map / file to finish the install.

Step:1) download - unzip file / custom map
Step:2) Click your ''Start'' button (lower left on task bar) and click ''Computer''
Step:3) Open ( double click ) ''C: drive''
Step:4) Open ''Program Files'' - or ''Program Files (x86)'' > mine is the ''Program Files (x86)'' on Windows7.
Step:5) Open ''Steam''
Step:6) Open ''steamapps''
Step:7) Open ''common''
Step:8) Open ''left 4 dead 2''
Step:9) Open ''left4dead2'' should be 3rd or 4th from the top
= notice the difference between the exact spelling from steps 8 and 9.

* Step:10) Open ADDONS !! *

Thats where the custom maps go :) Remember to ''double click the map'' to finalize the installation. You may also need to restart steam after installing some custom maps, but not always.

Note: You DO NEED Steam ''addon support'' for all this to work! You get steam addon support from your steam ''tools''.
You find ''tools'' in the drop down box inside your Steam game ''library''.
Install addon support if you haven't already. If the maps you already have before you install addon support don't show or are not working.....simply reinstall them by double clicking them again. If they don't work from there you will need to delete them...redownload and reinstall them from scratch.
You should now be able to play the maps on single player and all other modes as well...
enjoy :)

I would say the simplest option is to place the addon files directly into the folder.

Read what stoker187 posted.

Is there a reason also why they don't work in Multiplayer?

Some custom maps are not able to support vs/multiplayer! You need to see what maps allow vs etc before you DL them! Hope this helps :)

Well, in this case, it's not a map I'm talking about, it's an NPC mod, it doesn't show the change, period, but a convo I saw between the author and a downloader did insinuate that it should, though it might be with a few glitches o_o

Let's say you've placed the maps in the right location, but they won't load up anyways, or when they do, they crash to desktop immediately. What should you do?

It is not a map, it's an NPC Mod
