I was told by one of my Steam friends that it is best to purchase both games. Purchasing L4D1 should give you access to those maps in L4D2. Even if I am wrong about the previous point, I can still tell you with confidence that people are still playing L4D1 today. I recommend waiting for the games to go on sale again; with enough patience, you can get both games for only $7.50 USD.

If you can afford to buy both L4D and L4D 2, then buy both. Definitelly.

People will tell you that L4D 2 is "superior" to the first game for having more content, but that isn't entirely true.
L4D 2 is good when it comes to wide variety of weapons and online game modes (though that's not really the best argument, since most of the game modes are largely ignored by the playerbase).

L4D 1 is excellent when it comes to storyline, character development and the atmosphere in general. Lots of people still play L4D 1 online, so don't worry you wouldn't be able to enjoy it

Hope this helps you make the decision and not ignore the first L4D because of the second one :)

I think you should buy both if you can or just L4D2.

Has many weapons, game modes, campaigns and infecteds is the good thing you want to hear. That makes you every interesting to play than L4D1. But I think versus mode in L4D1 is the best that L4D2 can't be equal.

L4D2 now has many addon contents, including campaign (The community made these campaign very surprised,) and still have more in future is the most important thing you must be aware of.

L4D2 has excellent community-run DLC, I'd say go for that.

L4D2 definitely. It already contains all campaigns from L4D1, more weapons, more special enemies, more game modes, workshop items etc..

L4D1 has a much better atmosphere and I enjoy it a lot more, sadly barely anyone plays it anymore and you won't find much custom content for it. People still do occasionally make maps for L4D1 but its mostly for L4D2.

That's not true. Kids are everywhere.

No, you will enjoy l4d2 much more, more hours of gameplay, as i said, more campaigns, more weps and much much more..well i don't say L4D1 is a bad game, but since all those campaigns are in l4d2..there is no point to go for it..i don't know what are those ppl saying about atmosphere, it's pretty much the same, all sounds are the same etc..
These games has got the same price, but when i compare L4D1 to L4D2...the first one should be at least 50% cheaper.

Left 4 Dead 2 is what you should buy because if i'm not mistaken, you get l4d campaign and also it has amazing mods
