Error 55, VPK, and ........
i have this problem with 9 campaigns from the workshop having conflicting files (.txt and, really, .vpk) for about a week now. the campaigns are deadb4dawn, bts, ihatemtns, deathwoods, salthellpark, tacobucket, suicideblitz, blackoutbasement, and fallindeath. these all were flawless until about 10 days ago and now they have this warning about conflicting files, see the console, etc. i have had them for a long time, even fall in death for a month, no problems. i dumped them all (deleted and unsubscribed), deleted a couple of troublesome l4dmaps.com campaigns, verified my cache several times and uninstalled and reinstalled L4D2 3x. the last install resulted in an error 55 (steam code) for 36 hours where L4D2 would fail to launch in play. steam support (HA!) would not even let tickets be submitted all weekend "due to high ticket volume" (sounds like the summer sale shop servers, doesn't it?). i finally got L4D2 to run and i have just started downloading those campaigns and they all have the same damn conflicting file warnings. plus steam keeps crashing and updating so the campaigns are DLing over and over, all of them each crash/update. every other thing i have on steam has no problems; steam is ruining L4D2 somehow. and its not just me with these conflicting file problems all of a sudden; look in the steam discussions for a taste of what's going on...

I think it has to do with multi-part campaigns having the same missions.txt or other file. The EMS update changed the way the game handles something with those (I don't know exactly how this works). I don't know of a fix, other than to recommend downloading the campaign/map as a single file manually. (Once again, I don't know what changes have been made, so even that may be a shot in the dark.)

i might sound stupid, but what is the EMS update and when did it occur (come to think of it i can google EMS update maybe)? and i think you are right that all my problem campaigns are multi part download, so i'm gonna verify that. thanks for the reply!

The issue seems to stem from the latest update. It fixed some addon load issues, and seems to have changed how multi-part addons are loaded. As a side-effect it shows multi-part campaigns with redundant mission scripts in the different parts as conflicting.

This issue (there are a lot of others though) doesn't seem to cause any actual problems with loading and playing the campaigns, so the campaigns should be playable if the console messages only show the confliciting files being in the same campaign.

Campaign authors can fix the confilict by removing redundant files.

Edit: Here is the changelog. Seems like detecting the mission scripts is a feature.
