I think l4d2 should have an item drop system.
I want to customize my boomer's spew colors, and particle fx and stuff. Also his shirt. Why does every other recent valve game have an item drop system except for l4d2?

no sense of economy or achievement to just do it by mods, We can have mods alongside an item drop system, can't we?

One word: Coachpan.
Let's not make that a reality that I have to mod out. The glory of Left 4 Dead is that almost all mods are client-side, your game is entirely your own and nobody else has to see your potentially poor or tasteless choices in mods.
TF2 can get away with it, GO can knida pull it off (I've modded the weapons in that too, so camos are a moot point), but Left 4 Dead? No.

Your right, ive been praising the client only mods but maybe a light progression system just to add some goal to reach.

The big problem with that is Left 4 Dead 2 wasn't built with a customization system beyond modding in mind. What could they add for customization that doesn't undermine gameplay value, in terms of visiblitiy, et cetera? Different particles, FX trails, so forth, somebody's probably going to find one that increases visibility and use that because it makes the game easier. (I actually have a mod that does that, but it looks awesome. I don't play Versus any way.) If someone else doesn't have this customization, they are at a disadvantage against the person with the customization.

In addition, if each player customizes something on their survivors/Infected, what would show online? Since there is no "hats" system, the only thing that can be changed are textures. And four different textures cannot show online at the same time. If some of us have model replacers, what will an online customization system do to those?

Customization can only properly work client-side and there is simply no room for an "official" online visual customization system.
