Sick of the single "behind you" zombie which spawns with specials
About a year ago I think this was added. I stopped playing.

Whenever a tank came, and you were backing up from him, the game would A L W A Y S spawn a single zombie, behind you, so suddenly you couldn't move backwards any more.

It is fully predictable, artificial and desperately annoying and frustrating.

Boomer vomit leading to a zombie rush? that's fine. Part of the game. Makes sense, within the context of the game.

Magic zombie *always* materializing behind you when a tank arrives? no, that's stupid. It doesn't make sense within the context of the game AND it screws you over. It's a cheap trick. It sticks out like a sore thumb, happens every time and will blow away the last 15 minutes of careful gameplay. Being killed by a cheap trick IS NOT FUN. It is annoying and frustrating.

I think I'm finding it now with normal specials, too.

Tanks are loud
zombies are attracted to noises
they are always a bunch of zombies
i never have a problem with it
thats why you have teammates to kill them

.......yup

don't think that's ever happened to me.

I'm not sure if they're always spawning, or if a zombie or two is merely lurking in the shadows and is then activated by the tank. But I've cleared rooms before, then turned around and saw a lone zombie drop from the ceiling. Not sure if it's intentional or not, but it's pretty lame.

But with normal specials? Oh yeah. Cheap as hell. Having a hunter spawn and pounce within the same second because he spawned 5 ft away from you is cheap as hell. And recently every 20th special or so will be dead silent until it attacks, no sound, nothing on captions. The minimum spawn distance should be increased, and silent specials need 86'ing. Cheap tricks, I agree.

I have had common zombies appear in cleared rooms behind me too, I had thought I was just missing something, but apparently not...

Here is another example I ALWAYS encounter. And it can be REALLY annoying. Dead Air 4: The Terminal. The end portion of the stage where you have to set off the infinite horde from the alarm when you walk through it. When you get all the way to the safe house. Then dozens of zombies will come pouring out of the safe house room. NO WAY IN HELL could that small room have that many zombies in it.

When the tank comes zombie spawning stops, because the tank is active - EXCEPT for the inevitable single "behind you" zombie, which spawns at the same time or shortly after. The tank is not attracting a horde - and you're right, maybe should be! but that would be impossible to fight.

Doom 3 was critized for this, as I recall. Whenever you had an encounter, EVERY time, there would be spawns behind you. Regular as clockwork.

No, I've actually seen them spawn.

Zombies have to spawn somewhere, but I think the game should try not to spawn in areas which have been cleared out and have no other entrance. It harms immersion.

What skill level do you play? wonder if it varies.

Chances are it's probably spawned before you've activated the 'tank' and common infected do stop spawning in areas you've cleared...well sort of, the map is broken up into cells, once a cell has been cleared/progressed past, idle common infected will no longer spawn in that cell if you backtrack to it. The spawning behaviour for rooms is basically "does the survivors have line of sight? No. Is the common limit reached? No. Has this cell been cleared? No. Spawn a zombie." There are bugs with the spawning which are relatively rare where you can see infected spawn sometimes, especially if you're moving through the map quickly (you can actually have a horde spawn inside of you).

Very interesting, Azimuth. What's the source for the information?

I'm not convinced the behind-you zombie is a natural spawn, because it is fully consistent (always with Tank and always a little *after* the Tank has come, e.g. when you've got to the point you're engaged and typically are kiting, so are running backwards) and always behind - not sides, not in front.

As a campaign rusher, I agree with what Azimuth said. MANY times have I seen weird spawns. For example. When I rush ahead to the end safe house, then come back out & backtrack to meet up with the other players. Areas I witnessed as clear, all of a sudden have zombies in them. And this is backtracking in a chapter. Then there is of course the above post I did. About having a odd number of common spawn in a small room. Then coming after you.

I am not 100% sure. But I think Azimuth looked into the " cvar " files. The files that run this entire game. A real - life friend of mine said something about this. Again not 100% sure. If Azimuth and / or anyone else knows more then i will be quiet & let them have the floor to speak.

I expected you to also mention the silent jockey, in case you haven't noticed yet. They are plugins to fix this one, but overall players are always playing vanillia. It's a big problem when you're the last one standing.
Soup Toaster Jun 24, 2013 @ 1:42pm
Don't think I've had this problem accept on rare occasions, pretty sure it's just random bad luck. I mean, you wouldn't remember the dozen times it *didn't* happen, just the times that it did. Human nature.

Can people when describing their own experience indicate the skill level they typically play. I do wonder if game behaviour varies by this in ways other than zombie damage.
