Cold Stream can fit into the story
While this campaign is officially non canon, I've thought of an explanation to tie this campaign into the story. After the Parish, the survivors are flown away in the military helicopter to an unknown destination. While en route, the chopper crashes in a heavily infested wilderness area. Unfortunate for the survivors, the gas tanks ruptured and started a forest fire. Everyone grabs what they can, and divides it among themselves in a (sort of) safe location.

So thus begins Cold Stream....

So by my count, they've crash landed in two helicopters then. And their next best idea is to get in another one at the end of cold stream? That smacks a little of tempting fate.

There wasn't a choice in their evacuation method for Cold Stream. They were running along, found a walkie talkie, and were told to get to a helicopter. Keep in mind that they can only go forward, because backtracking would get them caught in the forest fire. And with a gauntlet crescendo happening, there really weren't any other viable choices. And crashes are a main cleche of the series anyway, so it wouldn't hurt to add another. Plus, it perfectly explains the forest fire.

It does kind of explain it, but if I was there, my first thought is "Hm, so the last two helicopters I got in crashed. You know what, you guys go ahead. Im gonna just hang out here." Crashing twice and survivng is a miracle. I'd rather take my chances

Go ahead and stay, let the fire and zombies murder you

I've already fought my way through entire states to get there. To the military outpost. With lots of guns. And a tower. And zombies burn. and metal doesn't.
