Most of the video options are for looks. Just make everything medium settings and the game still looks more than passable.

What are you getting on average?
spect Ratio:.......................Widescreen 16:10
Resolution:.........................1920x1080
Display Mode:.......................Full Screen
Film Grain Amount:..................None
Anti-Aliasing Mode:.................Disabled
Filtering Mode:.....................Bilinear
Vertical Sync:......................Disabled
Shader Detail:......................Very High
Effect Detail:......................High
Texture/Model Detail:...............High
up to 80 down to 40 and then in between
I think the only thing you should know about effect detail is the render distance of objects. This does not include zombies and weapons, only objects, props and even the tank debris. The higher your effect detail the further you can render distant objects/props. If you are an experienced player i suggest leaving it on low since it does not only increase your fps but also gives you wallhack for further object/prop since the game does not render distant objects/props on low but renders the infected behind the object/prop. The only issue you will be having is countering the tank's debris which you might need practice. If the debris is far then you need to predict where the debris is to counter it on low effect detail. You can leave it on default if you want to. Hope this helps

First, this is a post from seven years ago, second is that low effect detail is a bad idea. Not being able to see tank rocks is pretty bad. Keep it at medium.

If you are having problems with countering the rocks then yes keep at medium. The rock will be clearly visible if its near the player on low so its not fully invisible

What if you want to shoot the rock to destroy it but you can't because it's invisible? You see the rock for like half a second before it disappears from view only to reappear suddenly again; This doesn't have to be about you dodging either, it could be a teammate that is in trouble.

By the time the rock reappears there's very little window of opportunity to get out of its way. The risk is not worth the reward imo

Above implies if you're in versus. If you're in campaign then tank rocks are very easy to dodge, the AI is easily fooled by movement.

this is just personal preference so its okay to leave it at medium
I rather say use required settings, but if you have to low it as much as you can. Do it. but it mostly blames the addons for the crashes and etc. (plus lag)

Most certainly
Dumb necro, but putting effect to max will make subtle lighting change in some specific corner and you’ll see some affects like rains will be amplified on higher setting. Also some reflection seems to be better on higher.
7 years old post though

Ehh higher setting can prove to be quite useful. In fact, sometime it’s better to play ultra or low.
Low memory page will make props to be more transparent, giving you a free wallhack, but that will mean you won’t see the tank rock until a moment later.
Higher effect will make the lighting to stand out more, allowing you to catch threats, but then better lighting could also simulate better darkness effect, restricting your vision.
