The Creatures for example are part of Machinima. Alot of you're favorite youtube videogamers are all in videogame networks. That is how they get their money and avoid their videos of gameplay from being taken down. I recommend not monetizing your account if you play videogames because if Valve decides to take motion to block your videos then youtube will take every gameplay video down not just tf2, halflife or any other Valve owned content but all gameplays because they won't risk EA or other doing the same like Valve.
So the proper way of making money on Youtube when you're a youtuber who plays videogames and posts them is by joining a gaming network who has the permissions from the gaming companys themselves.
