Left 4 Dead 2 Linux?
Hello,

Does anyone know how the Linux version is coming along? Is there an estimated availability date? If you own the current release, will the Linux version be included?

Thank you.

Jeff

There is no date, only Valve knows it.
Thanks to SteamPlay, you can play it on any supported platform, if you have it in your Steam account.
I bought it two months ago, still waiting for Linux release. Before it comes, I use Wine :)

You can watch news:

1/ Official Steam for Linux group - http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/
2/ Valve Linux Blog - http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux
3/ Left4Dead blog - http://www.l4d.com/blog/

I asked them for L4D2 release on the blog and they replied:

"We can’t provide a date for those games but we are working on numerous Source games with the plan of getting them out to our Linux crowd in the future."

My biggest concern with buying the game early is the fact a lot of people state a reason for companies not supporting Linux is that our community will buy the Windows copy anyway.

I want Valve to know that I had no intention of buying the game until it had a native client.

Having said that, I can't wait for it's release and don't mind valve taking their time to make sure it's good quality!

You are right! Thanks for inspiration! I'm Linux user! I want Linux games - I won't buy non-Linux game. It's a only way how to force developers to develop for Linux.

Yes I am also interested. I already got L4D2 expecting it to come to Linux, but now it's getting silent. When will it be released?

I don't think this is how it works. Either you buy the game and they've no idea which platform you bought it for (e.g. because you bought it from a browser and they don't check the agent string for platform--likely) or you buy it from Steam Linux anyway so they know you bought it from a linux client even though it's a Windows/Mac game.

Probably they just check which platform the game was INSTALLED and PLAYED on. So if you buy it now and install it later on lnux, it's all good.

They track everything so they know what platform you play it on.

I have no desire whatsoever to donate money to Valve or any other company for a game until they release for Linux since that's my primary platform. With the Steam Box coming hopefully console and desktop gaming will merge and Linux game compatibility will become the norm eventually. The One Platform to rule them all. As long as standards are respected and improved further it could very well happen, even if Valve started being majorly abusive with Steam at least there is Desura and Linux as a whole to support so gamers could still use their Steam Box regardless since it will be open.
