REMOVE PINION SERVERS! VALVE
Cannot connect to most pinion servers without getting a connection error, or sound stutter freezing. Not a sound driver problem.

Guide - How to block pinion ads in game.
How to block pinion advertising and disable the ingame adverts: http://piniongg.blogspot.com.au/
Find your hosts file first under windows, for detailed instructions on editing your hosts file see the URLs below:
Windows Vista/7 - http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-hosts-file/
Windows XP - http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/how_to_use_hosts.html
Wndows 8 - http://www.howtogeek.com/122404/how-to-block-websites-in-windows-8s-hosts-file/
Now add the following to your hosts file and save it afterwards:
127.0.0.1 pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 bin.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 blog.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 cdn.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 crm.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 cp.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 delivery.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 docs.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 kermit.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 legacy.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 log.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 mail.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 motd.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 ns1.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 ns2.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 ns3.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 ns4.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 ns5.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 ns6.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 pinionprizes.gg
127.0.0.1 pog.gg
127.0.0.1 pog.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 stage.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 templ4d2.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 tix.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 video.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 voip.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 wiki.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 oscar.pinion.gg
127.0.0.1 ads.intergi.com
127.0.0.1 adback.pinion.gg
TIP: In Windows, edit C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (it’s just a text file so you can use Notepad but make sure you run Notepad as Administrator otherwise you won’t be able to save the file)
The more ppl do this the less we will see of pinion plugin on servers down the road.
Or if you run any anti virus such as Avira to allow access to hosts.
This method also uses wild cards - so it is very reliable but also keeps blocking variations using any of the known domains. So, this needs little or no maintenence. Do you really want to add one IP Address at a time? I don't!
1. Install Acrylic DNS Proxy on your Windows PC
http://mayakron.altervista.org/wikibase/show.php?id=AcrylicHome
2. Configure your active Ethernet or Wireless adapter to use 127.0.0.1 as your Primary DNS in tcp/ip 4 setttings.
3. At the END of your Acrylic Config File - add these entries to [WhiteExceptionsSection]
[WhiteExceptionsSection]
NAME1=*.pinion.gg
NAME2=*.pinionprizes.gg
NAME3=*.*.gg
NAME4= *.motdgd.*
NAME5= *.ptp22.*
Note: Some of you MAY not wish to block the entire *.gg domain. My view is there are NO legitimate web sites hosted on that domain.
After doing this, the ads will TRY to display but instead they'll just time out - you will be able to immediately just bypass them (hit Go), and start playing.
Just block them in the hosts file
Wayyy easier
If you know all the IPs of the ad servers you can just block them and be done.
Also heres a legit website
https://champion.gg/
Happy now? Or you gonna keep arguing about a domain name?
Thus far there is nothing to maintain. The ad server domains have not changed since pinion servers were introduced.
If they did change you have absolutely no gurantee they would stay with a .gg and not move to a .com (would you recommend i make a wildcard rule for all *.com domains once this happens to block pinion?)
I peronally have the offending pinion advertising pages blocked in a L3 ACL on my network. For the normies I would recommend the hosts file method as previously mentioned or making a windows firewall rule.
The method you recommended is the sledge hammer approch. There are much more elegant ways to achive the same result. (Not to mention by using a 3rd party dns (your method) you are providing an easy vantage point for a man in the middle to spy on your web browsing, Collect telemetry etc. There is also a huge potential for rouge behavior from that 3rd party hosts file program as well)
If you use this method and are happy with the results that is great but dont tell others to resort to shady methods to do something that is easily manageable from wtihin windows. There is no need to reinvent the wheel here. The time tested methods work just fine and requires 0 "maintance" thus far.
Thank you for your input. I respect that there will be multiple views on this, and ask you for the same. Just because you feel strongly that the traditional way is "better" is not a reason for me to choose to not present what I feel is a better way - for me.
Wildcard support is very powerful. One may CHOOSE to leverage them differently than I have personally done. For example: *.pinion*.* - or - *motd*.* could be very useful and then it wouldn't matter if they changed from a .gg to a .com - provided of course that the string value is there there.
