Is cheating as rampant as it seems?
Seems like everytime I join a pub game in team vs. there are cheaters. Speed hacks, wall hacks and aimbots. I try to get some vs on with a couple of friends and it's ruined everytime. Are we just having bad luck?

I didn't even see a single hacker in this game yet, are you sure you aren't simply bad at this game?

scrap wallhacks from your list btw, shots in l4d2 pass through walls, and as long as you have headphones you will have no problem finding infected through walls.
a wallhack won't make a difference to your skill in this game if you know how to play properly.

Wait, so knowing the exact location of every spawned Special and Boss infected doesn't make a difference? Having invisible props and foliage, or no boomer bile texture when puked on doesn't help highly skilled players have an extremely unfair and large advantage over equally skilled users playing 100% legit?

with the sounds they make you'll know their location as soon as they spawn, unless you play on the lowest volume.

the infected that will have a SERIOUS issue with wallhacks are the hunter, spitter and smoker, as those are more distanced infected.
it won't make any difference to jockeys, boomers [non-rockets] and chargers, and of course, tanks, as they make extremely loud noises and their location is predictable.

You and your friends are definitely just bad.

Fun fact is that yes ppl hack often. However it seems, they never show off footage irl of themselve making those neither. Gotta be expecting from Source Engine anyway. Only answer you'll get is "bad skills" because that's how internet hipsters snoobs work. By the way, this game is easy depending the way you play it, grab an HR and just wait for hackusations.

One protip for you to know if somebody hack, take hunter hide behind a wall and wait for that usual HS ppl do without you even pre crouching. It's funny. Almost feels like valve made infected footsteps to be heard on purpose too. Surprisingly a lot of players change the game however the feels by adding haymaker binds, changing boomer bile filter, removing/adding sounds quiet/loud, making skins that gives positions better, triggerbots, scripts from addons file. So many things tell, only thing you can do is open your overlay and block the kid.

I joined a private server owned by a hacker. I was a Hunter hiding behind a car, a jumped to grab on a survivor but I was killed in midair in one shot by a deagle by this owner. Ths went on for 3-4 times including speed hack until I confronted her about her hacks. THE WHOLE SERVER went on her side and I have no idea why. After I keep getting killed by her deagle in 1 shot, I got kicked for not being a sheep.

A deagle can kill you in 1-2 shots... and hitting you midair as a hunter is easy unless you are leaping through cover...

I'm assuming:

Speedhack = bhop
Wallhack = as mentioned, headphones and experience
Aimbot = pro/experienced

It's not as rampant as it seems. I choose to assume that a player that does extremely well in a match is probably just as good as he looks, rather than accuse him or her of cheating. I realized that making such accusations just make you look butthurt, more so if the guy really is just a lot more skillful than you are. No point whining about actual cheaters either, unless you actually believe that Valve's gonna do anything about it. Cussing and swearing at them ingame doesn't change anything either, and you're probably just giving him or her more to laugh about.

I've only ever encountered 5-6 hackers in 3 incidents in vs throughout 3500 hours playing. They're always super obvious, moving way way too fast w/o hopping at all as if they had no clip on. Just speed hacks is what ive seen. And badmins killing you through console commands before you spawn in.

Spawning in solo or ahead of time = dead.

Deagle doesn't do 250 damage. And 3 headshots in a row in midair seems abit extreme.

Headshot = 4x damage, Deagle = 320. Don't bother checking up facts before saying anything.

Well the speehack was obvious. They weren't bunny hopping they were just running around really fast. I say them were aimbots because they were shooting at us behind walls where we weren't visible and from a distance. Like I was a hunter far away on the other side of the cane field and got sniped, no way I was visible and it happened to all of us

If it is an online game and if it is competitive: there will be cheaters. No exception. They are everywhere in every game, even indie games.

Not in large amounts, but they are there. And cheat programs become more advanced and more difficult to notice. There will now always be doubt whether you lost because the other guy is really good or maybe he cheated. Nothing we can do about this.

With enough common sense you can point out obvious cheats. There are those who lack this common sense by the truckload. I've seen youtube videos of people autolocking on ghosted SI, single headshot-kills through concrete walls, etc.
"he just has good ears" "he can aim really well"

Wow.

But to OP: no it's not rampant. It is possible to run into a lot of cheaters in a single day to give you that impression. But I've seen like 3 cheaters in my L4D time. That is, the once that were obvious.
Postius May 11, 2013 @ 5:39am
You will never ever catch good cheaters, the stupid ones? Yes very easy, they don't lnow how to cheat properly. But the good hackers and cheaters, you will barely notice. If a really good player uses hacks he knows how to use em properly without getting caught. Hacking is a seriously problem in any source engine game and every other game as well.

You can easily see the idiot hackers, but alot of the really good players hack as well. And you wonnt catch them. They are way more subtle with turning hacks on and off and are mcuh better at using it. Not everyone that hacks/cheats is an idiot.

But yes lots of cheaters in this game. And than even the super simple stuff like making foliage dissapear, alternate skins, no weapon models, no bommer biule, spawn timers, no screen shaking, no leaves on trees and bushes etc etc. which arent considerd cheating but give you an extreme advantage

PC gaming will never ever be fair for both sides, it pains me to admit it but if you want a fair game, you are better of on a console. Bigger chance of a fair game, also bigger chance of screaming 12 year olds, but that seems to be the l4d community in general online.

If you really think console gaming is cheat free, you should seriously stop believing that right now. It's just as easy to hack a console game as it is to hack a PC game, if you have the right tools.

As others have said OP, you're having one of two issues. You either:
1) have crappy luck, and always end up joining a game of cheaters.
2) simply suck and accuse others of hacking, which is fairly common.
