Not the largest community (It's slow in the morning American time) But evenings are always full and even when it's slow you can find games easily enough.
Playing L4D1 is unneeded, minus one survival map L4d2 has all the content 1 does (and that survival map you can get in mod form)
Worth noting though that the game is on sale for 5$ often so you might want to wait for that.

The versus community is rather harsh against unskilled players, the problem is one bad player can screw over the team (L4d2 is far more team heavy than most games) If you stick to co-op you'll be fine (Just don't jump into expert right away)
Just keep in mind the game will grow on you, you just need to give it the time and patience to do so.
