Generic Gamepad Problems
My controller doesn't register correctly in game. When I start it up, I can navigate the menus, but Square/X selects, and nothing else works. When in game, I can't turn left or right, so simply remapping the controls doesn't work.

Oddly, if I disable gamepad in the settings, the controller continues to work.

Don't use a gamepad. Never use a gamepad for an fps is you have a mouse and keyboard.

Thanks for the useless advice but playing local coop isn't possible without a gamepad.

Didn't know local coop existed in this game.

It's extremely hidden. Without using console commands, you'd never know it's possible.

Ah.

has it continued working? If your on windows an easy fix is to use x360ce and use console to run the 360 config in lfd2. My main problem is on mac the input for generic controllers is all screwd up.

I've tried using x360ce to no avail. I asked on the forums and they said L4D2 doesn't need an emulator, it accepts all controllers. It's very odd, like I said, when I disable gamepad, it continues to move.

I tried starting up a game, enabled the gamepad but couldn't look left and right, but could navigate the menu with the buttons messed up, couldn't press pause though. When I disabled gamepads, I could still navigate the menu, but when I returned to the game, I couldn't move.

When at default, aiming left and right results in meleeing and shooting, and pressing the shoulder buttons result in the menu pausing or the scoreboard popping up. It's like everything has been moved up one slot.

When I tried to use my controller, I believe I had to open the controls menu, and pretty much bind everything manually. It picked up everything I was doing but didn't automatically set it as the controller. Worked fine after that, if I recall.

You can't rebind the way you look.

Using x360ce, I can get relative control over it, but it makes it much more difficult setting splitscreen, I still can't figure it out

I cant remember when some PC FPS game had a gamepad support... I mean it IS FPS you dont need a gamepad to play it, you dont use it and extremly small number of people would even try to play it on gamepad. I seriously doubt Valve would look into this question more to do enable some support for it especialy for some things that are not even in menu (you said you needed to use console to enable local coop)
I think best bet for you and your friend that wanna play with you is just to try over network. I think enabling double support for gamepad and key/mouse would be quite messy!

Regardless, with the use of an older version of x360ce, some tweaking, and a mod that creates a menu for splitscreen, it works fine.

Thanks for posting.

Trust me, people will know that your using a gamepad because of the way you will behave in game, and people like to kick gamepad users for obvious reasons.

Considering he's previously stated it's for splitscreen, I'd doubt that a kick would be successful.

Yes, I'm going to kick my splitscreen partner everytime they enter the lobby. They'll never see it coming.

Jesus, common sense.
