Left 4 Dead 2, crash on start up with windows 7 (PLEASE HELP!)

I recently installed windows 7 and now, whenever I start up Left 4 dead 2 it gets past the valve logo and the intro movie but, after the loading screen brfore the main menu the game just crashes and goes to the desktop without any error message or warning. Would anyone happen to know what's causing this or have any solutions for me in order to fix this error?

running windows 8 pro 64 bit. same thing. cannot get past intro movie - then crashes to desktop... wtf

Try to look at your Graphic card drivers, that should just be it.

the drivers are brand new. just installed new hd 7970, and updated the drivers.

totally understand what you are saying :) Have done all the basics, the system is fresh install, all drivers up to date. 250 gb SSD, i5 3570 cpu, hd 7970 gpu, 32 gb ram. honestly should not be having issues :P with this game. :/

Try see if you could try re-installing everything, this should help.
(Steam-servers had some probs this week so maybe...)

checked validity of files, sometthing downloaded, and it fixed. thank you Maelstrom :)

try verifing game cache -- right click l4d2 under games, click properties hit the local files tab and click verify integrity of game cache.

That helped me! After I validated it (which took forever) it downloaded a file, and PRESTO!
