At least i don't crash when i download a campaign...
L4DMaps addons do not require you to be online, if downloaded properly they install completely with a simple copy/paste, and custom maps/campaigns are contained in a single .vpk that won't conflict with itself.
You also don't have to worry about deleted content you've subscribed to attempting to verify/update itself endlessly or a mod updating if you don't want it to.
You can also get some good help so long as you dont' ask questions that have been answered 50 times and you're not stupid.
The only reason you should use the Workshop is if there's something there you can't manually download.
The Workshop is catching up in terms of sheer density, but the content is less focused and finding quality mods among the sea of emerging mods can be difficult. The same could be said of L4DMaps, but the tagging and categorizing system there is much less abused.
for other kinds of mods like graphics replacements and goofy stuff : i dont care mutch about those. Also maybe funny to somebody, its longterm value is questionable. And every "enhancement mod" likely increase probability of conflicts and troubles. Its an problem hard to come by.
Well is obvious for me that i prefere carefree. In these times storage space is a no brainer
