Crashing on Windows 8.1

Keep the Windows 8/8.1 sucks comments to yourself please. This is about reporting a problem. Updated drivers, still getting crashes on joining a map. Seems to only happen on some servers and/or maps however. For example, I can join a game on (what seems to be) a valve server, but the moment I join another server with a load screen, or that pinion crap, the moment I click OK, it crashes to the desktop. I tried joining about 20+ games tonight, I would get in to maybe 25% of them. Some would crash the moment I loaded in, others would crash the moment I clicked OK on the server welcome page. Only started happening since I upgraded to 8.1.

Well, since Windows 8.1 is a newly released Windows version a few problems, bugs and program incompatibilities are to be expected (it's not the 1st time that people have problem with some games or other software in a newly released Windows version/upgrade).

I would try the most common "possible fixes" 1st.

- Check the video drivers;
- Check the game files (verify of the gam'es cache via Steam in this case);
- Check for possible addons conflicts (and remove all the addons just to be sure);

And as last resource, do a fresh install of the game.

You can also try to send a ticket to Steam support and maybe they can help somehow. They might take a few days to respond though.

Thanks for the comments. I've tried updating the drivers, that didn't seem to work. I do have a few addons, so I'll remove those and try again. If that doesn't work, I'll try validating the files or do an install.

I just get crashes on L4D2 if I join an campaign on multiplayer. Some weeks ago this seems to be solved.

And yes, everything on my pc is running very fine. All drivers are updated. Also for my graphics card, which is a Geforce 650 Ti from PNY

I do not own any addons for L4D2. The game keeps crashing instantly if I join a server.

I had this problem, particularly on PINION servers. Whenever I clicked "join". IF YOU UPGRADED to WIndows 8.1, Windows keeps the OLD windows subdirectories and games down in windows.old. Your program or icon may still be linked to that OLD version.

Check it out. Solved my issues 100%.

My games are installed in a different directory. All my games are laying on a seperate harddisk - no partition, a whole hd just for games :)

I did a "repair" to the game. Now it seems to work.

try running the L4D2 excecutable in compatibility mode for Windows 7

I run Windows 8.1 and love it, after the upgrade I had serious trouble with
L4D though. The game wouldn't start at all and the files verification tool jumped from 1% to hundred in like a second, so it obviously didn't do its work right. Steam troubleshooting didn't help either. I had to totally remove Steam, including the game folders. Then reinstalled it from under Win 8.1. It took some time, but I redownloaded all the games content and personal settings remained untouched due to Steam Cloud. all working fine since then.

Exactly Mr.Au (Gold?). Its those of us who *upgrade* that have consistent issues. L4D2 doesn't transition well, but its perferctly fine when it starts being downloaded into Win 8/8.1 environment from scratch.
