Game won't load?

I've been playing TF2 a lot more than L4D2, but recently I've been wanting to kill some zombies.
When I tried to load the game, my steam things changes like it usually does saying I'm In-Game, L4D2. But after a minute or 3, the game doesn't load and my steam says I'm online instead of playing L4D2.
Fine then, its been a while and maybe I missed an update; I uninstalled and re-installed the game. Same thing again.
Restart my laptop. Same thing.
Verify the game. Same thing.

Is there something I'm missing/havn't tried to do yet?

Maybe try disabling the in-game steam overlay?
When you reinstalled did you delete the l4d2 left overs in steamapps?When you uninstall a game it still leaves ♥♥♥♥ there like settings and what not and even mods!
If none of that works try some different launch option commands like -windowed or -novid(novid will skip the intro movie and take you right to the game)
If none of this works let us know because Valve did change the engine not that long ago and it is possible that it is no longer compatable(happened to one of my machines now only 3 out of 4 machines can play) Hope you can get it running best of luck!

Ok unsuscribed, uninstalled and deleted the whole folder, then installed. Still not even opening the l4d2 game window. Can't try different launch commands because of that - dunno how to change the options when the game itself won't open.
Tried it without internet - Nope.
I don't know what is ment by disabling the steam overlay.
