if you use win7 you can set off the windows aero design.
what about your pc specs? are they above minimum requirements?

i don't know the specs of my pc, but i played serious sam 3 bfe and that required 1gb of ram also, its just the family pc that we use for homework and stuff. i remember playing l4d2 once before on my pc and it didn't lag that badly, but now it is. maybe it was just the size of the level, i don't know.

You said you could play times before L4D2 without laggs and smothy. The computer you use is a family PC. So I think the problem is now that the PC is full of "rubish" (excuse this word, I don´t know any other and I´m not perfect in english^^) and maybe there are running many background applications. Check it out

you need to get all background programs to stop running close your browser and also delete unnecesary programs movies music stuff like that, that you dont use anymore and also dont be downloading anything while you play that should help you out a bit also to check what processor you have click start control panel click system and security then go to view amount of ram and processor speed, there it should they you your ram and proccesor with its speed

I don't mean to be trolling, but in late 2013, if you lag at lowest settings on a half-a-decade old Source game, I strongly suggest you find yourself another hobby.

If this guy's computer is as old as I think it is, he might not even find that because it's different on Windows XP. Running Windows 7 with 1 GB of RAM is suicide, not even Internet Explorer will run without lagging.

true i can run l4d2 with a dual core proccesor 2.50 ghz and 2gbram runs smooth on high settings

I know right it doesn't take much at all to run this game.

Some three years ago, back in the day, I used to play this game with a friend that had AMD Sempron at something like 2 GHz and a 256 MB 8600 GT with 2 GB of memory and he could still play it on mediumish with decent (50ish) fps, i've seen calculators faster than that!

I don't mean to be a jerk OP but, just don't play on your family's computer, if you need a L4D fix get it on Xbox or upgrade your computer, just about ANYTHING these days can run Left 4 Dead fine.

With 30 bucks you can get 4 GB of memory, a GPU capable of running this game at medium settings will set you back with another 30, just about any processor on the market today can also run it, a rig capable of playing L4D built from 0 would cost you less than $250, and that's a ridiculously low budget machine.

yeah im not that tech savvy but a friend of mine built me a pc for 200 bux with custom case and stuff like that making it yourself is cheap
and yeah op get a new comp or something plus family computers tend to get used exstensively so performance wont be top but try what i told you to do and see if it works just might
Dr. Dro Nov 30, 2013 @ 9:55am
not only that, if his family's members are not tech savvy (just by making multiple accounts and restricting administrator access will prove this to me) it's very likely that his already low spec system is clogged with unnecessary applications and even some malware too.

hell you don't even need Windows to run Left 4 Dead, if you're going to build a system purpose built for it you can go with a free copy of Ubuntu or Mint Linux, or even the upcoming SteamOS itself... you ever seen those $300 Core i3 Intel NUC computers that are about the size of a wallet? those can run any Source game with ease, and consume less than half the power of the average light bulb.

a year of use without maintenance and cleaning up can slow a computer down alot

Please, define "well", playing with everything on lowest settings, lowest possible resolution, at 20 fps is not exactly what I call playing anything well.

I should note that Half-Life 2 is turning 10 years old in just a couple months, so honestly, your calculator is long overdue being thrown in the junk pile. I know parking lots that have faster machines for their management.

^ This. Do yourself and other people a favor: stay away from this game until you have bought a new PC. A guy playing the game with an FPS so low that it's like watching a slideshow will play the game even worse than those damned BOTs Valve made. No offense by the way.

Not only that, i'm also taking his own enjoyment into account.

well i don't usually play online though. i own left 4 dead 2 on my xbox (which i hate, i want to get the steam machine when it comes out) and i am ok with playing single player. i actually don't like playing games with random people i don't know.

but thank you everyone for your advise.
