'Singleplayer'
I got this game after being promised a 'single player'.
Yes there is a campaign... And you can play solo with bots but daaaamn that AI is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
You have to lead every time, they don't go where they are needed. Also if you enter a room often somebody stays outside where they are an easy target. AI doesn't know how to use melee or throwable weapons either and if you're further then 2 meters away chances are it will take them a long time before they get those nasty zombies off your back. Also you are the only real victim for the special infected as you lead the pack so if you walk to fast (or if you walk at normal speed and they get stuck somewhere or wait for you to walk further then 5 meters) chances are you'll take 60% damage when the first special zombie attacks you. Don't forget that the jumpers don't actually have to fly towards you to hit you, they teleport at the moment they get off the ground.

I could go on for about an hour about everything that is wrong in this game, like how fire spreads through a brick wall without being visible beyond the wall. You start a fire inside a room, outside the room a zombie runs past and suddenly it bursts into flames and it does more damage when it approaches you. Or how when you pick up 2 identical guns they become the standard gun + a glock. Or how you sometimes can't pick up the same pistol twice. Or how sometimes when you switch the guns for a melee weapon you only drop one pistol so you have to look for the other for a while. Or how bots don't pick up painkillers or throwables when they have the space for it. Or how they rarely heal you. Or how the witch can instantly take 99% of your damage while being almost unkillable. Or how jumpers seem bulletproof in mid-air. Or how when you are júst hit with Bile your gun disappears and you can't even spray some bullets around just in case. But if I were to tell you about everything that they failed to fix I'd be writing a book.

And then there's the kind of things that arn't needed for this to be a somewhat decent SP game, but things that I would just prefer to have in here. For instance giving a hold-your-fire command. Or a cover-me-command. And a way to identify the Singleshot and the Pump shotguns.

So to wrap it up. This game should not be sold as if it came with a singleplayer. This game is crummy enough as it is, but singleplayer is absolutely unbearable.

(By the way, what's up with the witches? I sometimes get 'Next time don't startle the witch'
But that seems a bit hard with all the gunfire going on. Turning off the flashlight doens't work either and she takes at least 10 shotgun shells from medium range so I'm assuming she won't go down from a rifle/smg heady.)

The problem here is that you are not skilled enough to appreciate the game, and don't seem interested enough to play the game as it is ment to be played.

Left 4 dead series was made to be a team based multiplayer game, that is why the story aspect of this game is basically non existant, and the single player and campaign can feel bland and repetitive when compared to versus.

If you are having problems with difficulty then put it on easy and go from there. Witch takes one shot in the face close range to shoot her, the bots are stupid, but if you actually improve and play the game as it is ment to be played you would probably enjoy more.

L4D campaign is ment to be played either casually or seriously by 4 players with good communication, versus is ment to kill each other 4v4, this is a multiplayer game, valve cared so little about story that they actually released the story as seperate comic books (lame).

Typically one of only reasons you would stay playing by your self is because you dont think you are good enough.

Try the "Improved AI (Advanced)" Addon. Helps a ton. As for witches, listen to the hint text. Don't startle her. If a horde or SI approaches, back off and deal with it/them first, then prepare for the witch. The witch is by no means invincible, concentrated gunfire from all 4, or even 3 survivors can take her out in less than 2 seconds. Turning off your flashlight might look like it doesn't help, but the witch gets pissed off if you stare at her, whether it's on or off; the flashlight only accelerates the process. Hope that helps you, and I hope you learn more as you play.

The only time it was mega popular to play campaign was on left 4 dead 1 where it was easier to have a casual time with friends, or where you could solo rush the campaign as the game was easy even on expert.

Left 4 dead 2 was made to exploit the versus aspect of the game, hence the longer maps that feel way too long and boring in campaign but perfect for versus. That's why when you go to l4d2 lobbies, there are very little expert or advanced lobbies for campaign, versus reigns supreme.

BUT IF YOU GO TO L4D1, there are almost no versus games, but quite a bunch of campaign lobbies to pick from.

L4D1 was simpler, in l4d2 mechanics were exploited for versus experience.

edit: what i mean by boring long campaigns, is that when you play versus, or with other people, the joy of playing campaigns on expert by your self is very minimal. atleast to me. I never play expert campaign by my self, because there's nothing to it. NOTHING. With other people it's funner because a.i. doesnt help, but then again, why have very smart A.I. when this is not how the game is made to be played?

I know it sounds bad but that's how it is.

I am an advocate for valve making a game with seperate campaign and versus, they can make a rich story like HF2 and just release versus exclusive maps as no one gives a dam about story when playing the dam versus mode anyways.

Thats why the release of cold stream and the passing were failures, and i will expand on this if you wish.

The only times i have played expert campaign single player, has been for run throughs of the maps, rushes is what they are called where you rush campaign in less than 30 mins etc.

Difficulty isn't the problem, I have died twice so far but teammates can revive you so no biggie.
I didn't go SP because I don't feel good enough, I have plenty of experience with all Source Based shooters. Okay this one feels nothing like the others so took a little getting used to but I'm doing okay. It's just that (maybe because of the game givaway during christmas) I often get put in a server with noobs that don't stick together that I thought AI must be better then the people I played with. But that was even worse.

And I know this game was meant to be played with 4 people... That's my point... They promise a singleplayer but the singleplayer is even crummier then the normal gameplay. So it shouldn't have the singleplayer-label in my opinion.

Thanks for improved AI tip, will check that out. And about startling I'll try that too, but the teammates don't help me fight her usually so I guess I'll just keep dying every time I see her and hope they revive me in time or make more headies with an M16.

I already deïnstalled the game, I'd much rather just play HL2 or HL2 mods which feel so much better combat and movement wise. I just wanted to warn people about the fact that the Singleplayer label shouldn't have been there before they feel duped.

wut? despite not being able to use throwables bots are better than 95% of the players(though sometimes they have problems with killin smokers and things like that)
OttoNL Jan 2 @ 3:36am
That tells us more about the player skill then the bot skill. Bots are awfull players are even worse. Doesn't make the bots acceptable though.
pi73r Jan 2 @ 3:38am
But most of those things are bs. Bots focus on healing you. + It's no problem to do realism expert as 2 guys + 2 bots if u know what you are doing.
OttoNL Jan 2 @ 4:54am
Most of what things? Things I listed? What's BS about them? I don't follow...

And no they often don't heal me, not even if I'm the only one without medipack and the only one with below 25% health and they have no zombies to shoot at (as they don't shoot calm zombies)
illuknisaa Jan 2 @ 5:07am
Bots will try to heal you when you go below 50% hp even they need the heal more.

Bots aren't that stupid. They are just slow to react. Only thing they seem to have trouble with is smokers.

But humans seem to like to prove to me that I have not seen the stupidest thing yet.

If the bots were any better people would just kick other people because they weren't bots.
OttoNL Jan 2 @ 6:45am
Ok then they just don't heal me :P

Why would anyone want to heal you? You are just some random noob who comes to whine on the forum about the games faults after only playing 4h. Clearly bots think you are an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and "forget" to heal you.

I will go to hell and back to save a bot in need because I know they would do the same for me.

Be nice or die alone.
