Some Thoughts
So, I decided to post this because I get tired of being shot. An easy way to work together. This takes it beyond a run and gun or the annoying "STICK TOGETHER!!!" strategy. A few tips on how a "SWAT Team" would handle room clearings, hallways, and open areas. An easy way to think tactically. It's a little slow going but you survive. This also really helps in expert.

Now, clearly, most people will just hope everyone else follows them. Some will read this and think it's a boring way to play. But, I'm pretty bored now so.....yeah.

#1: No one should be looking in the same direction and scan your area. The direction of their gun can tell you where they are looking. If you enter a room, open area, or hall whoever is First usually tries to blindly progress thru the map. I like use this to my advantage and use them as an unwitting pointman. The Second should be looking in any other direction than the First. Third then covers the Second's rear and so one. Obviously SWAT Teams will already know who goes where prior to entering. You can call it out as you run through the maps too. But, keep in mind your team probably isnt going to designate a "Pointman." So it is important to pay attention to where another is looking, then enter the room, because you can still cover them from the door way. SWAT teams generally have a rule, "The First is always right." Meaning even if First calls left and goes right it doesn't matter. Second adjusts to First because First may need to act on a threat or be blocked somehow. This eliminates friendly fire, and needless damage from commons.

#2: You can see in the rooms, clearings, or halls before you enter. When applied with #1 this is a great advantage. SWAT Teams even have all kinds of nifty methods for this. An easy one is when First is on one side of doorway and Second opposite first, Third in middle, and Fourth covering rear. In halls Third and Fourth can cover First and Second's back. First and Second can scan almost the whole room forming an X with their line of fire. This can be done very quickly or very methodically. Think of another method as slicing a pie. This is done with one person at the doorway and all others still looking in opposite directions. Or second covering First and entering after while applying #1. The person at the doorway starts at one wall and moves to the other in a half circle away from the door. Again, very quick or methodic. This provides almost an entire view of the room as well. There are a ton of different configurations with four people and most of which can be utilized by one person to look into/clear a room.

3# Moving around can be tricky when one bullet seriously injures/kills your team. Typically a good formation for L4D is a line with space in between players while applying #1. First covers front, Second left etc. Again, SWAT Teams have a ton of formations to move safely. When passing rooms, openings, or halls that don't need to be entered just glance in. Second will see First engage and can cover. If First does not see a threat that is there, Second can step in and the threat has usually already commited to First. Giving Second an opprotunity to engage in relative safety.

Most do not understand this stuff. But, if you do you can adjust to at least one player while applying most of these principles and they won't even know. You will find that just by applying #1 your friendly fire rate drops significantly. #2 will primarily be done by yourself in L4D. Get on the wall outside the room, open area, hall and clear all that you can see. Then "slice the pie."

SWAT is something only friends can pull off, the chances of such coordination in a public lobby are aoutrageously slim. Friendly fire happens because either somebody has bad aim or somebody else moves where the first was not expecting/shooting. It si virtually impossible to eliminate in a game like this because of latency, the sometimes frantic pace of the game, the limited FOV which means you can't see everything to know where your teammates are and where they are aiming, and general human error. While SWAT tactics are neat in theory, actual game application will be much shakier.

Swat tactics wont work because zombies can spawn from pretty much anywhere (even from thin air infront of your face). You should always have LOS to most of team because when SI attacks ♥♥♥♥ can happen so fast that just turning to face your friend means that you and/or your friend died.

I know this isn't Vietnam. This wasn't meant to start being able to join lobbies and form these strategies on a whim. I explain the methods a little bit then give a simple application to L4D.

"Most do not understand this stuff. But, if you do you can adjust to at least one player while applying most of these principles and they won't even know. You will find that just by applying #1 your friendly fire rate drops significantly...."

And isnt't this a better discussion topic than the most recent "I suck at this game?" or "L4D sucks," or "L4D DEAD IS FULL OF F***ING GRIEFERS!!!!!" or "noobs ruin my games!"

I see. I guess I'll see your name around other posts. Being negative. Thanks for the bump. Enjoy!

It is a more interesting thread than the usual, thank you. And some semblance of small unit tactics can be a great benefit to this game if not quite at the level you write about.

And yes ThePlagued is a little punk-azz who has advocated greifing and trolling as legitimate ways to play in other posts.

I just had an awesome team member in Expert Parish. We were able to get this kind of groove while moving quickly. Most importantly is #1. Don't look in the same direction as anybody else for an extended time especially while entering populated areas.

After another month of not finishing maps on expert due to shoddy teamwork I think it's time for a bump to this thread and maybe a re-iteration. Do not stand directly behind your teammates. Do not be so damn eratic in your movements. And do not turn the same way as your teammates when going into an area. Even if they go towards the right direction at least clear the other way first. And, most likely, you will get more kills than anyone because not only are you getting those obscure zombies that end up sneaking up on you and the team, you are getting zombies that block the path to safehouse. It really isn't that hard to apply to this or any game. I know my OP may have sounded a little too technical for L4D but read and identify what is practical for L4D.

If anyone that reads or has read this and fully understands these tactics add me. We would roll thru the maps with ease and it will be epic.

If you only take one aspect from this post may it be this; STOP ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SHOOTING ME.

I think you have control issues, and a passive aggressive nature.
Restless Feb 4, 2014 @ 10:25pm
The problem is that the game is filled with idiots who have no care for strategy or instruction, they simply want to run around and "have fun". SWAT tactics should be plainly obvious to anyone who has played any FPS game but everyone thinks that they're the leading man in a movie and cannot or simply refuse to support others. Problems stem from those with an over-inflated ego and super-sensitive kids who can't handle communication and internet chatter. Some players simply refuse to apply logic and critical thinking to a video game because they just want to "have fun", and apparently that means running around like a moron.

Errrrrr...

Isn't SWAT usually the attacking party?
Not sure how SWAT tactics, regardless how much 'video-gameified' they are, can be
applied to a game where you get rushed by hordes of enemies all the time?
Maybe nitpicky, but still.

I agree, however, that a bit of solid common sense would go a long way towards a
more enjoyable (and social) gaming enviroment.

Rainbow Sixx, its at gamestop, it's not that fun, but its what you are looking for.

Maybe some minor control issues. I need to drive where ever I go because I feel safer. I am however kind of aggressive but I have a lot of patience.

Restless if you wish to play L4D sometime maybe we can eventually build an awesome squad and roll with expert realism. You have a valid point. I suppose that's a reason I never thought of before. Most of my problems completing maps is because people run off or shoot in my direction, hitting me, trying to kill everything they can see. Don't get me wrong. I have friendly fire on occassion but the difference is astronomical compared to my team. While I don't generally expect strategy to happen, I don't think it needs communicated in L4D. Common sense should indeed go along way.

But, squad tactics as far as the way you move together have a huge impact on L4D and it's really fun. Even if people were able to stay aware of their team/surroundings but they can't. The thought, "we never cleared this area..." doesn't come around. Obviously your tactics change and should be more fluid in the situation of L4D. People can at least clear the direction they are looking instead of trying to kill everything. Knowing when to fall back should land under common sense as well. Calling out lefts and rights can be a big help too. But, even when I do have mic people just turn my way because I called it...and end up shooting me.

Zombie Vietnam would be sweet.

The game I want doesn't and will probably never exist. I also have to agree that Rainbow Six wasn't very good.

correction. army of two is great. involves perfect team work. if you rush a level, you are killed real easy.
most fun with a friend

Gix, I have, on occasion grouped with 3 others that had their ♥♥♥♥♥ together. And we cleaned house. Rare but it happens. Your methods are sound. Those who dissed on your post are most likely individualists. They leave men down, hord health packs, have highest team member shootings etc. !2 year grunt in the Corp so I concur. These methods will get you expert on all obtainable maps. Thanks.
