Never got to experience versus well myself, I got the game christmas and from the bit I tried it's just awful because of how whiny some people are and the poor balance of players. You usually have the versus experts who know every trick, dangerous spots, and how to set up or avoid witches properly. And then you have people who aren't as good and just get dominated from simple tricks, such as a death charge. Granted this really wouldn't be bad as pubstomps are to be expected but a lot of players get really angry at this game fast and it makes a poor learning experience for anyone new as you'll get kicked pretty fast.
If you want serious, fun, competitive matches of Versus, you should look into the ProMod community.

Even if a game is balanced between the two teams, as soon as the first person is kicked, that balance is destroyed. The result is a team that grows increasingly inferior, until quitting is not ragequitting but the only reasonable action for the remaining players.
Looks interesting but idk about all the other extra tweaks to the match the author forces into it. I'm fine with the gameplay mechanics as it is, I basically just want to play with people who stay in the game, don't do incomprehensible stupid sh*t, and don't DOS the server as soon as they start losing. Not to mention it also looks like a pain in the a$$ to get going just for a server mod: http://www.l4dnation.com/wiki/ProMod_Installation
Install this, install that, install Confogl, then install ProMod. Eegh.
That only applies to people who want to run their own ProMod server. If you just want to play ProMod, you don't need to install anything. You just join a few relevant Steam Groups, learn some console commands, and then that is pretty much it. There are a few ingame commands to learn as well, like !ready, !unready, !spectate, !tank, !current, etc.
You cannot have your cake and eat it too. If you want serious players then you should understand that the gameplay changes are necessary because vanilla versus is heavily imbalanced towards survivors. The people who author ProMod do so based on the feedback from the community. It is essentially the Confogl mutation but constantly updated by the community. In addition to all the balance tweaks, scoring is a huge part of what makes ProMod meaningful compared to vanilla or Confogl versus.

Look at the changelog. It looks like it balances some things like damage, health, items, etc. etc.
