The microphone issue that no one can solve.
I have reformatted my computer (I think that worked) and reinstalled l4d2 (this did not work). I cannot figure out why my mic does not work only for the game l4d2. It used to work just fine over a year ago. I still have the same computer setup and the same desktop mic. I have searched for countless hours last night + on and off in previous months.

Here is the issue I see in console when I open up audio settings in-game:
CGameUIConVarRef doesn't point to an existing ConVar
Unable to initialize DirectSoundCapture. You won't be able to speak to other players.

I have done process of elimination tests and tried everything people have suggested on this forum and elsewhere. I haven't updated any drivers because there are none for the logitech desktop mic. I have windows 7 64-bit.

What is the console telling me exactly? where is the problem occurring? My mic does not work only for the game l4d2.

I have a USB logitech desktop mic. 2 soundcards. Creative sound blaster x-fi HD, and asus xonar usb. No, the sound cards don't conflict, windows only recognizes the default or uses playback on the "default". As I stated before, I have had this setup for a long time and never had issues with my mic before.

Analog might be the solution, but just for l4d2?

Think valve needs to pay more attention and support for voice communication.

I have an MSI gaming laptop and a USB Razer Carachas headphone/mic rig. The audio is incredibly static-ridden (unusable) but it works fine in Skype and other places. I am using Win7 64 bit. So, it may be something particular between Win7 64 bit and L4D2. I'm peeved by it as I am a coop player and stopping to type is... a health risk. But the game is good enough I just make do.
