Downloading Add-Ons
Was enjoying it on Xbox, now starting to play on PC and want to take advantage of mods.
Step by step, how to find, download, and install mods? Thanks!

workshop you just click on a mod you like, and subscribe, turn on game and let the add-ons load up. thats it.
if they are red, means they are conflicting and can cause a issue

First things first, the Workshop is only one resource. It is not the most reliable method of installation, but it is the easiest. I recommend www.l4dmaps.com and l4d2.gamebanana.com as trusted and dedicated mod sites.

To install mods from other websites, first download. You may need something to unpack .rar files like 7Zip or WinRAR. The end file you want has a .vpk suffix.
Navigate to the Steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead 2/left4dead2/addons folder, and copy/paste the .vpk file there. That should be all you need to do. The game should do the rest.

like these guys said.
theres two ways though

Workshop:
go to workshop for left4dead 2
browse
select
subscribe

then start the game and let it load the add ons.

for the website .vpks need to be downloaded.
for example l4dmaps
go to the sight
go to l4d2 section
browse
select (you can open multiple tabs, one for each mod.)
download (do the captcha first)
then head to the appropriate directory
64-bit
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\addons

32-bit
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\addons

then copy and paste them into one of these directories
Personally I feel workshop was perfect until it decided to limit how many mods I could use per game (btw, was that fixed?)
I had heard that the workshop was fixed, but I don't know from personal experience as I don't use many mods.
The Workshop is far from perfect, as it's subject to the whims of connection to Steam servers and whatever nonsense Valve causes. Manual installation may take longer and demand more attention in staying updated, but it is almost always more reliable.
I don't have a problem with workshop as such, but that no one playing modded maps is running the WS versions so there's really no point in downloading them anyway.
So left4dmaps.com it is.

Yeah, for custom maps I usually prefer http://www.l4dmaps.com/ since they're usually split up into pieces on the workshop.
I would not recommend Workshop. It has a long history of problems.
Download your mods here L4DMAPS.COM

Manual Install
Copy the .vpk to your L4D2 add-on directory. If this folder does not exist, create this folder.
\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\addons\

Enable / disable add-ons.
Once you have successfully installed your maps you can enable or disable them at any time.

1. L4D2.
2. Click on 'Extras' button from the game menu.
3. Click on the 'Add-ons' option to load all installed addons.
4. From here your list of addons will be displayed. Check / uncheck addons to enable / disable.

You can remove add-ons by deleting them from your /addons/ folder.

Step 1: Go to workshop
Step 2: Click on an item you like
Step 3: Click "subscribe"
Step 4: Start up left 4 dead

Enjoy!
Okay, thanks guys. Checking out the website, Redemption and Redemption II look promising.
Is there any way to download without that adware powered download installer, zip opener?

I download from L4DMAPS all the time and I have never seen that installer. Pick another mirror.
Also make sure you are downloading L4D2 campaigns, not ones for L4D. Redemption may be L4D only.

l4dmaps does direct download only, it's just a .vpk zipped. There is a captcha for downloading, but that's all to it.

Redemption is for L4D1, Rdemption II for L4D2.
Thanks so much everyone....just played the Redemption II map....that was awesome!
OK, tried to play Redemption II online with my girlfriend after she added it as well from the same place, but so far every time we try we get an error that the maps do not match the server and we end up disconnected....what kind of server should I pick?

Also WAY off-topic, but thought I would ask. If I use PUSH to Talk on the Microphone, is there a way to map that option to pushing striaight down on the Microsoft Gamepad right stick? If not, what is it I need to push on the keyboard?

Thanks in advance guys! You are all really helpful and I appreciate it!
