Is it possible for another player to screw with your l4d2 game?

I was in a versus game with 2 other people they were excessively mouthy saying things like They will kill my family etc.

After we got into it a bit one player threatened to make it so I cant play anymore. I m like ya what ever a few minuets later I quit that game.

now every game I join a game its fine for a few moments then everyones pings start to spike. until the game is unplayable.

could this person actually mess with someones game like that and iff so what do I have to do to fix this Thanks.

the odds of that happening are insane.
I mean really we would be talking about the person being able to infect your PC with malware witch would be nearly impossable unless they knew your IP or something of the sort or had some form of getting into your computer.
the only way that would ever be possable is if you dont have an anti virus at all even then most likey what happened is that guy was trolling you.
you went to a laggy server and got high ping.
Make sure theres nothing downloading in the background or anything to make sure that isent the cause of the ping also if your sharing the inernet was the person your sharing with gone when you dint have lag if so then you've got two low banwith to handle what ever number of people you have currently..

Actually I did hear of people forcing their internet to be bad, or something like that. How, idk. Did this happen, idk. But I heard of something like that before.

Also, didn't the Steam servers wig out (again) just before or around the time of your post? Could have to do with that, maybe.

Yeah, and what Epic Star said. It's highly unlikely those morons would be able to pull of a hack of that magnitude. Though there is talk about script kiddies being able to DoS a server, but even if that's true (which I doubt unless I actually see it), they would need to know exactly what servers you connect to and so forth.

I wouldn't worry about about those threats, they are as hollow as the heads of the people they came from.

Ok thanks for the replys, Its just seems so suspect that right after I quit that game the next 5 games I went into were fine at first then everyones pings would shoot up to near 900, I did a internet speed test ping was 13 and speed was 30 megs. O well I will try again tomarrow Thanks.

Well for the heck of it I deleated and reloaded l4d2 and went into a online campaign it was good for maby 20 secounds then pings shot up to over 900 for all players, Im starting to thing this guy did something some how.

Going to try to play l4d 1 and team fortress and see how that goes.

Hm, are you sure it's you causing the ping? You should also ask the other players if they have that frequently today. Might help to home in on the problem.

And I would now see if one of those "speed test" websites give normal results for your connection, and if it's messed up there, too, try resetting your box/router or whatever you use.

Could simply be your provider messing with the lines, it's not unusual. Dunno which timezone you are in (they do maintenence at certain times, normally), but maybe they struggle with a problem, and you are feeling the results. That can also happen from time to time.

Trying out other source online games like you say you will now is also a good idea.

Yes I think Its me just tried another campaigm game all pings go up to 996 I have never had this problem with l4d2 before No problems with internet speed otherwise. Not sure what he could have done. but its screwed now.

You're being ddosed. And anyone decent can get your IP even if you put it offline. Unfortunately you're screwed till he gets bored.

I remember being able to get IPS through a game tracking website, that can get IPs even when your profile is private, for example. Valve servers have improved a lot though, you can't really ddos them as easily anymore using that crappy script kiddy program.

They can also get your IP through groups. You may want to check the groups you're in for the player that was giving you a hard time, or quitting some groups. Another way they can get your ip is your friends list.

Try changing your name. There are ways to change your IP address possibly. What ISP do you have?

Maybe you already did, but make sure to report whoever threat/harass you. That is grounds for a ban. Not that they will necessarily. It's worth trying though. Make sure to report the DDOS thing too.
