My computer is fine it may be old but this isn't the first time i have run l4d2. I reinstalled it to play with friends and it just started acting screwy.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core Processor 3800+ 2.00 GHz
3gb of ram
32 bit operating system.

I know old computer but it works fine even better when i added a graphics card.

that info doesnt help.
what we need here is the graphics card.
what graphics card are you using it seems that some of them dont handle L4D 2 and the black screen could be the graphic card failing it will fail because it cant run L4D2 so most likey thats the problem

Its not the card i been running it fine with it so thats not it.

hmm thats strange then usally from what I've noticed the black screen is the graphics card failing. that was with my older laptop though
the only thing I can think of is reinstalling L4D2 thats about it really :/

I'm back. Sorry about that mess before, I was actually as confused as you were by my post - Didn't get much sleep and all that ;)

Now, I'm ready to try again.

First: Even if you say the card is fine, I woud still like to know what make that card is, how much RAM it has, etc. The model would be enough, though.

Because Epic Star could be on track, and something is about to give out in your machine. Could even be the CPU, though in that case you probably wouldn't just drop back to desktop.
Still, might be an overheating issue.

So, annoying as that sounds, I always like to ask if you cleaned out your rig recently.
Dust can build up, slowing down (or even stopping) the fans, leading to similar things like you describe. And because that can get worse quick, you should check that option, at least.
Also, do you experience similar stuff with other games?

most likey that could cause the problem your facing is due to the outdated drivers.
if they happen to have to be the CPU or graphics card driver then its almost 100% the problem

Hopefully.
Still weird that you can "play a bit" and then drop out, instead of not being able to start the game at all. Oh well, drivers are always the easiest solution - which isn't a bad thing to keep tabs on, heh. Good Luck.

There is a chance that it's to low of ram too. 3 gb is pretty low for almost all games and if oyu're running other things that can cause an issue

I did fine with 3Gb for a year or two when L4D2 was released.
