Excellent game, but...
First of all I would like to point out this game is amazing, very well done, and generally a blast to play. I think Valve did do an excellent job in the development of this game. But I would like to point out an event that happened last year. Last year, in December I believe, Valve decided to make the game a free download for a day. Now, this wasn't like the "Free Weekend" events in which they make a certain game free for just a weekend and when that weekend ends you can't play the game. Oh no, this was not that. Instead, they decided to make the game free to download that day, and when you downloaded you could keep the game for yourself. I myself actually picked up the game when this happened, but to be honest, now I feel awfully guilty. First things first, the event was practically hidden from everyone. If for some reason you decided to have a look at the Left 4 Dead 2 store page that day, you would realize that it was free to download, but it wasn't like a big annoucment type thing in which in the front page they put a giant picture saying "LEFT 4 DEAD 2 IS FREEEEEEEE", oh no, it was very well hid in fact. Actually the reason that day I found out about that was because PC Gamer had made an article about it and I checked it out. Now, I would see why Valve didn't advertise it because if they did, about every single user on Steam would have found out and everyone would own the game which would mean they would get less money from Left 4 Dead 2 after that because the only people which would buy it would be newcomers, and that means less money for Valve, but still, it was kind of a ♥♥♥♥♥ move for the people that were waiting for a sale for it and they didn't get informed about anything. The second thing is, many people were downloading it, including me, and that sadly meant that Valve was welcoming a bunch of noobs to a gaming community full of people that really, really take the game serious. Not a very nice thing for people that bought the game, let's say, the day before the game became briefly free.

Sorry for this big blob of text, it was just my personal opinion and I felt like this had to be said.

They posted the free thing on the forum, and in their newsfeed.

Plus, it probably wasn't planned, they just decided "it's christmas, lets do this."

Didn't realize it was posted on the forum or newsfeed. I'm so sorry, even then, everyone doesn't follow Valve's newsfeed or the forums.

Oh, I was just mentioning, my friend told me it was free, but I missed the day because store was down, and I had to work. lol.

But idk, before I play a game, I read some forums to see what issues I may see, or what kind of people play.

Steam sales happen. Either visit Steam regularly, put the game on your wishlist, or read third party sites like reddit, kotaku, or l4d's blog. It does suck to buy a game and then have it go on sale the next day, and Steam does offer a one time refund for each account if you appeal quickly. This is life.

It was posted on their Facebook, Twitter, and all Groups run by Valve themselves such as the Family Sharing Group. It even came up in the Update News for me. The event was not hidden at all. As it was the Steam Servers crashed massively due to the amount of people trying to download this game.

Again, I'm sorry. I don't follow Valve on Facebook or Twitter. I suppose many people do, but sorry about being so uninformed.

Sorry if I swounded rude, reading back over it, it sounds very snappy so sorry about that, I didn't intend it to be. I was just trying to say they didn't hide the event, it was more just bad luck for some people, I know a few of my friends missed it to and they follow Valve on some of those sites.

This is what people refer to when they talk about how entitled gamers are. You actually have the nerve to say it's a ♥♥♥♥ move just because people who were waiting on a sale missed it. I can't even fathom the flawed thought process on that.

It's my opinion, no reason to be so snappy about it. If you can't stand someone else's opinion then you should learn how to, it really gets people in life, buddy.

Also imagine how people felt when they bought the game yesterday, when they had an opportunity to get the game for free.

As one of those people. Who missed the free day, let me say.. Not as big of a deal as people ♥♥♥♥♥ about.. 5 dollars most the time normally, 5 dollars, walk around outside, pick up change, you can find that amount in a week..

Despite the fact I dislike Valve. And think they are selfish. The free day was surprisingly nice of them.
And anyone who wanted the game THAT bad, would have noticed. Since tons of people got it free, I would say it was advertised fairly well.

I realize it's not that bad of a thing, and it was advertised fairly well, but my opinion, a game that is free should stay free unless it becomes abandonware or the developers decide to make it a free to play.

So, pretty much, as a christmas gift, they should keep it free and make no money, because people didn't see it?

So a sale at a grocery store should remain there because SOME people weren't there to buy those half price steaks?

They put it free that 1 time, most likely because that weird Evolve game, or whatever its called.

They should not make it free in the first place anyways, and your example with the grocery store is quite stupid because Steam and a grocery store are quite different.
